La Pinta from beach

I booked directly with the La Pinta hotel after fruitlessly searching various websites for accomodation there. They all stated that the hotel was fully booked, so if you particularly want this hotel and get the same result, try calling.

Although not initially expecting much due to its proximity to Las Americas I was pleasantly surprised. I booked for myself and my two children on a half board basis. We arrived at the hotel after a 15 minute taxi ride from the airport costing 24 euros and were met at reception by friendly and accomodating staff who spoke good English, albeit the majority of residents appeared to be German and Scandinavian. The appartment consisted of a large bathroom with bath/shower, small but sufficient kitchen, large lounge with eating area, double sofa bed and a large bedroom with two single beds. There was plenty of storage space, very efficient air conditioning and the whole appartment was very clean. My particular appartment had a double terrace which does not appear to be the case for all. It was room 105 and afforded a view over the swimming pool and out to sea. Being on the first floor, the reception being on the fourth, it was close to everything. It is a large hotel and some rooms are quite a hike from the "hub" of things.

The pool area had recentley been remodelled and the sunbeds were locked up until 9am so as not to be draped with towels at 7am by over eager Germans. I didn't personally have any problems with getting beds because the beach, which is down a small flight of stairs from the pool and across a pedestrian promenade, was preferable for both myself and the kids. This setup meant I was quite happy for the kids to wander up and down to the hotel as they pleased. Although I did note that the pool area was never crowded. Also in the pool area was a small restaurant seperate to the main hotel serving snacks, drinks and operating a buffet service. The prices here were very reasonable with a toasted sandwhich together with a platefull of chips and salad costing less than three euros. Another handy feature of the hotel is that if you are booked half board you are able to change the evening meal for a lunch time buffet at no extra cost.

The hotel restaurant itself, where we took breakfast and evening meals, was again clean, friendly and with a good standard and choice of food. Both meals consisted of hot and cold buffets.

If you decide to eat out the choice is yours as regards variety and price. The buffets at the Chinese restaurants nearby offer excellent value. Go out of the hotel at the main entrance, turn left and they are about 50 metres away on your right. The cost at each is under 6 euros and half price for kids. There are plenty of supermarkets and shops nearby to stock up from. Out of the main entrance to the right and on the opposite side of the road is a small shop called Alldays, run by an English lady and catering for British products. Further up the road at the first junction is the commercial centre where you will see to the right of the junction a chemist.

As regards local attractions, the Aqualand water park is a must for the kids. Entry fee gets you all the water rides and a dolphin show, of which there are two. Check the times of the show when you get there to avoid disappointment. Also beware that, as with any park like this, food and drink are expensive so a pack lunch might be the order of the day if you could be bothered, you are after all on holiday. Very close to the hotel is the marina, Puerto Colon. Here you can book any type of water based activity you can think of; Diving, whale and dolphin watching, jetski hire, parascending, banana boats, fishing...you name it, they do it. Another nearby venue, loved by the kids, was the "Pirates attack". You can book through the hotel, 44 euros for adults and 22 euros for kids. The show consists of singers, dancers, acrobats and a quite fascinating contortionist. Food is included, which is basic but plentiful, as well as all your drinks. If I were honest I would say I enjoyed it as much as the kids. There are usually two shows per week but in the down season there is only one on a Monday night so, again, check on arrival if you fancy it. We were lucky as the week we were there they changed from two to one shows.

The area is lively in respect of nightime entertainment, but don't worry, all the loud stuff winds down between 11.30pm and midnight.

All in all, an excellent hotel in a very nice area enjoyed by all.
