Las Arenas: Great Little Hotel by Colin Etherington |
| Posted 20 August 2004 about a visit in July 2004 | Overall rating: 9.5 |
The Hotel Las Arenas is situated close to the Castle Bil Bil. To get to the beach you only need to cross the promenade road by the adjacent pelican crossing. It is literally one minute from the hotel to the beach – great! There are plenty of British bars and restaurants close by, and the seafront prom is full of Spanish barbecue restaurants. If you want to eat out close to the hotel, you are spoiled for choice. Try Shakespeares or The Last Resort. Walk along the prom to get to The Potters and The Wigan Bar - both very good.
This is a small, friendly, excellent hotel. The staff is attentive and efficient and were always ready to do everything they could to make your stay delightful. The hotel is being extended to roughly double its size and |I think this may change its atmosphere. There is anew pool and sundeck and a beautiful new cocktail lounge. (Sundeck currently inaccesible to wheelchair users, but work not finished).
The rooms are clean and the air conditioning works well. Our room was easy to keep cool. Most nights we slept with the aircon off.
There was a large selection of food at mealtimes, and if you like fish you are spoiled for choice. I don’t like fish, yet there was always something to choose. Half board customers can elect to have lunch or dinner. Occasionally food was not warm enough.
Benalmadena is very British, with plenty of bars serving John Smiths and British food. We found the resort to be full of Spaniards taking their holiday. This made it much nicer as there was no rowdy behaviour. One bar owner said that he usually closes for August because the Brits generally stay away. Don't miss Buzby's Fun Pub on the main drag nearer the Marina. Live entertainment each evening until 12 kidnight and then karaoke until 3 am. Don't miss the outrageous Colin Campbell on Thurs and Sun and the excellent Prospectors on Fri.
