| Las Vegas attractions | | | The Star Trek Experience at the Hilton, The Volcano Eruption at the Mirage, Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Mandalay Bay Shark Reef. Out of town, The Grand Canyon, a world-heritage sight, is a must see as is The Hoover Dam, which regularly makes modern ‘wonders of the world’ lists. At some point in your trip you might also be tempted to gamble. |
Las Vegas History and Culture | | Where can you take a gondola ride down the Grand Canal, explore Manhattan, stand in the shadow of an Egyptian Pyramid, climb the Eiffel Tower and erm… watch jousting at King Arthur’s castle, all without leaving town? Las Vegas of course! Everything about Vegas screams excess, from its very existence in the Mojave Desert, to the competitive hotel building of the 90’s that left the city with 17 of the worlds 20 biggest hotels. Las Vegas is brash, bright, glitzy, gauche and utterly lovable!
The City divides neatly into two parts, Downtown and The Strip. Downtown, known as ‘Glitter Gulch’ for its vast amount of neon is Old Las Vegas, whilst since the opening of the MGM Grande in 1989, much of Vegas life has moved out to The Strip, which is home to the big themed casinos such as The Venetian, Excalibur and Manhattan Nights. Downtown is still an essential visit though, as it is home to the smaller, more atmospheric (some might say seedier) casinos and to the extravagant Freemont Street Experience with its 90 ft high canopy with an LED display on its underside upon which sound and light presentations are shown after dark. |
Getting around Las Vegas | | Las Vegas is small enough to walk around, but if you find the heat oppressive you might wish to catch a bus or a taxi. If you want to get out of town, you’ll need to hire a car. |
When to visit Las Vegas | | Las Vegas is never really cold, though nights can be chilly during winter. Summer is very hot and Spring and Autumn are temperate. Frankly, as you never need set foot to pavement in Las Vegas should you not wish to, weather is much less an issue than price, which fluctuates almost on a whim according to big events and even bigger convention groups. |
