We have just returned from a fantastic fortnight's holiday (23/12/03-5/01/04) at Leela Palace. Our 3 children (f14, m11 & m10) also had a brilliant time. We jet-skied, parascended, sunbathed, went fishing, went sailing, had massages, golfed, relaxed, watched the sunrise over the river, and the sunset over the beach and ate and drank to our hearts' content. The sheer professionalism and friendliness of the staff went a long way to making it the perfect holiday, combined with a perfect beach setting, and luxurious surroundings, it couldn't fail.

Also we took options on tours away from the hotel. We went to the waterfalls and fed wild monkeys, we visited a spice plantation, did yoga at a hindu temple, went on a dolphin cruise, and best of all, spent a night in the jungle at 'Jungle Book', where we rode elephants, fed elephants, bathed elephants, and experienced the unique 'power shower' by sitting on the elephant's back whilst in the river. Even spotting a frog in the toilet, in the jungle, at 3am, could not dampen the spirits.

The Leela Palace is rated as probably the best hotel in Goa, and it certainly deserves that title. The service of the staff is exceptional. (Although we had not told them, they had noted that my husband was celebrating his birthday during our stay, probably from his passport details. On returning to our room that afternoon, a cake had been delivered, with best wishes from the hotel.) On the same note, we booked a table that night at the Riverside Restaurant, an Italian. We were not informed that the pizza oven had broken down, despite repeated requests as to the delay between entree and main course (now stretching to over an hour). The mood of the evening may well have been lost, but the management came, apologised and the meal was complimentary. Fantastic.

Service can be a little slow, even at the pool-side bar. We witnessed several other 'incidence' of complaint about delay in delivery of food. Each time it was resolved to the complete satisfaction of the guests. One maybe has to 'take a little time' and relax into the slower pace of life. It doesn't help if you are hungry, but the staff really do give their best. (They even have specifically designated ant patrols, and bird dropping eliminators!)

Compared to other hotels in the vicinity, The Leela is expensive. But it's surroundings and ambience are priceless. We had memorable Christmas Eve and New Years' Eve galas. The lawns spread with beautifully decorated tables, and food from just about everywhere around the world. Good stage shows, great music, good dancing and, as always, impecable service. Even the local Indian wine (Grover) grew on us. (One person we spoke to a few days later said it was the absolute best New Years' Eve he had ever had, and he had seen a few, all over the world!)

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. There were young couples, young families, childfree older couples, older children, young babies all having the time of their lives. It is worth every penny.
