| Lido Review: Three Night Break May 2004 | | Written by William Wright on 23 Aug 2004
| Booked an Easy Jet flight from EMA to Venice and found the Hotel Albergo Giardinetto to be within price range commensurate with the Flight, certainly more affordable than the hotels on the main Venice Island, booked it via the web, no problems.
Booked a Venice Orange Card, with Airport Transfer, before Departure, picked it up at the airport, well worth the forethought. When booking the travel Card via the Venice Tourist Board Web Site make sure that you adjust the pick-up date and Location to what you want, it must be purchased 48 hours before use, trying to get the call centre to adjust things for you is bordering on the nightmarish side of life. That said, it is really worthwhile, covers unlimited water bus use for the period. The Airport transfer boat drops you off at the Lido Boat Station, off the boat, and the hotel is on the opposite side of the square.

TIP!
If you hear a siren sound it means that Venice is going to flood, this happens not infrequently, depending on Tides and Wind, if you intend to go to Venice, ask at your hotel reception and they will probably supply you with plastic ‘wellies’ we found out after the event.
When we there it rained, and flooded, not the best of impression creators, the Venice Card will get you into the Museums on St Marks Square, the Doges Palace is well worth a visit, especially in the rain, it is all under cover, and with the Venice Card, there is no queuing.
Some of the places around the Rialto are reasonable to eat at, but if the Siren has sounded, remember that there are two high tides a day, we went back ito town on the evening of the flood, and almost got stick in the restaurant at about 21:30 with water lapping at the steps of the door. It can be a bit disconcerting when you have dressed up a bit, to try and pick a rout to a boat station without getting wet!
Choose you Restaurant with care some are extortionate! We slipped up, and did an any port in a storm visit, and a beer and starter was £15.00 a head.
All in all, I’m glad I have been, but is not at the top of my ‘Must go back to’ list. |
