Well, what a surprise was in store for us when we arrived at Lower Limpley Stoke. The Georgian hotel (Limpley Stoke) with 67 rooms is set in the most tranquil surroundings with wonderful views of the Avon Valley. The hotel is very comfortable with all ‘mod cons’and a lift to every floor which was a boon to our geriatric group. The public rooms are elegant and spacious and there seemed to be room for all eventualities. During our stay, there was a large wedding party also enjoying the comfort of the hotel (and the bar) and we hardly noticed they were there, apart from the children who took delight in running up and down the corridors, the floors of which are quite creaky! The hotel is well equipped to cater for banquets, conferences and has a number of restaurants. For the most part, our group were entertained in a separate lounge (there is nothing sinister in this I hasten to add!). The resident pianist, Michael, was in good form and we kept him amused with our own ‘impromptu’ entertainment.

I could not fault the staff. They were most friendly and really could not do enough to make us feel welcome and ‘at home’. I was really surprised by the high standard of cuisine. Neil Davis, the head chef is certainly putting this place on the map. Bearing in mind that we were part of a ‘bargain’ turkey and tinsel weekend I saw no signs of poor quality mass-produced food. There was an abundance of choice from three starters to three main courses and even more for the sweets. The food was hot, well presented and served quickly and efficiently.

All rooms had telephone, television and private bathroom facilities. Bearing in mind that parts of the house date back to 1760, it still remains very comfortable and elegant. The rooms are decorated to a high standard and the décor itself is tasteful and especially appropriate for the age and size of the house. Bearing in mind that for a considerable period, the house was used as a Hydropathic establishment, so the pleasant ambience this should come as no surprise. The pure water alone is sufficient to recommend the hotel to even the most discerning of guests.

Just a short walk from the hotel is the Hop Pole Inn, a 16c coaching inn and part of the same complex. Although we didn’t find it necessary to wander down there, (it is quite hilly) I’m sure we shall include that hostelry on our next visit.

Bath is just a 10 minute drive away and many of the local attractions are within easy distance.

This destination will be on our list again.
