Lindos Travel Guide: Lindos - still the place to beat!

Written by Janus Malakinaman on 24 Aug 2006 about a trip in Sep 2005.
Trip was for a group of friends on holiday. Janus Malakinaman would definitely visit again.

Lindos shopping

6.0
Lindos does not have great shopping as too much of the usual tat (plastic donkeys, fake sunglasses etc) has found it's way into the shops. Lace and leather goods seem to be good quality (if that's your thing!).

Lindos nightlife

8.0
In season (June to last week September mainly) Lindos nightlife goes on until 3am or 4am weekdays and until the sun rise at weekends. A good routine would be to eat late - 9pm or 10pm ish...then Antika Bar for say 11pm (or Luna Bar up the hill on the right after 60's Bar) or perhaps Lindos By Night..........as to clubs...from 1.10am (not beofre then though!) Arches is great and the new revampoed Qupes is great too (up the top of the hill beyond Lindos By Night) - it stays open very late. I must mention American Tom. He works in Luna Bar and later Qupes - he is a one man party and it's great to have him back from 2006. An inspired signing.

Lindos restaurants

8.0
Mavrikas for me is number one - also the only place with a Michelin Star (but not Michelin prices). Ahontika and Maria's Kitchen hard to knock too.

Lindos attractions

9.0
Lindos itself is a World Heritage Site with the cherry on the cake being the Acrpolis at the top of the hill. On the interior, they are rebuilding it as it was in Roman times. The views over Lindos Bay at sunset are spectacular. Lindos is a very pretty place - especially at night when the day trippers have all gone home.

Lindos events

The running with the donkeys is a daily occurence. Goats can be heard and may even make a trip to the beach.

Lindos day trips

Rhodes Twon is a must see and if your kids are bored (or you are a big kid yourself) Faliraki water park is a hoot.

Lindos History and Culture

3000 years of history , lindos offers an incredible landscape.

Here Cleoboulos, one of the seven sages of ancient Greece lived and ruled.

While Rome was a small Etruscan village, Lindos was a centre of civilised life, or art and culture.

The temple of LINDIA Athena was built by Cleoboulos in 550 B.C. and rebuild in the 3rd century B.C. in the form you see today.

The Apostole Paul was ship-wrecked at Lindos, founded the Rhodian church, and gave his name to St.Paul's Bay.

When the Hellenistic and Byzantine world fell to the Saracen invasions, the knights of St.John occupied the island.

They fortified the Acropolis, incorporating the old Byzantine church which is still visible.

The church in the village, dedicated to Assumption of our Lady ( Panaghia ) was built by the knights in the 14th century and frescoed by Gregorio of Symi in the traditional style in 1779.

Getting to Lindos

Fly to Rhodes then about 35 euros in a cab and 45 minutes sees you there. Don't get a bus - splash out!

Getting around Lindos

Walk or take a donkey as there are no cars allowed in the village itself - which is a relief.

When to visit Lindos

May and June and September are great as not over 45 degrees then but still great weather.
