| Lindos Review: Lindos - What's it all about...? | | Written by Peter Davenport on 19 Jul 2005 about a trip in May 2005.
| I've just got back from my seventh trip to Lindos having discovered hidden treasure there back in June 2000. My good mate and Lindian veteran Andy Barnett inspired me to join this site and spread the word that is - Lindos.
What is it that makes me, my friends and countless others return and pay homage there year after year? Is it the labyrinth of mosiac laden walkways and courtyards without traffic? Or the impossibly beautiful village with its cluster of whitewashed houses and rooftop restaurants? Maybe the Acropolis (dating back to 800 BC) looking down on golden sand in a beautiful bay?
The honest answer is.... all of these and more. Lindos has a charm and character like no other. The sheer power and magic of the place is irresistable.
For sun worshippers Pallas beach (the smaller out of the two main beaches) is by far the best. It has a wonderfully friendly atmosphere, great restaurants where you can gaze at the spectacular views of the bay and just the best feel between 6 & 8pm near sundown. It's newest restuarant - Scala even serves dinner and has a beach bar BQ once a week. Just make sure you ask them to play Elton's 'Tiny Dancer' as you look out to sea at sunset.
Dining out in the village is an experience in itself. Wonderful cuisine awaits you in some outstanding restaurants - my personal favourites being Odyssia (Dolmadis, Moussaka and fillet beef Stroganoff are out of this world), Ambrosia and Casa Pizza (best pizzas I've ever tasted). Wherever you are savour the view of the Acropolis above you - stunningly lit up at night.
If bars and clubs are your scene you won't be disappointed, but typically Lindos, they're all individual in style and character and without a karaoke machine in sight. 'Yanni's' (run by Nicko and Kostas - top guys)for a meet up and a cocktail as you watch the village go by, 'Luna' for class, 'Antika' for atmosphere and sounds, and for all you lovers 'Lindos by Night' for sheer romance.
Arches is the guv of clubs run by the enigmatic Vlassi (Lindos personified) quality drinking and dancing til sunrise. Qupee's ( a classic Lindos club) has re-opened after a few years and I was delighted to be there on the opening night recently, and wish Dimitri and his son the best of luck there.
The Amphitheatre has to be visited if you're new to Lindos, for the open air club experience. It's without date spectacular, overlooking the village and bay but personally I don't feel it's as good as it once was - a bit too serious for me and lacking the slight cheese factor that had that made it so appealing!
I do have to mention a 'without whom' tribute to my old friend Matt Warne. On a sunny, summers day in 2000, having lunch outside Bellini's in Kensington I asked him where I should go for a week to remember and he said, without hesitation - ''Lindos''.
I'm back in Lindos from Sept 17th-28th with my great mate Peter Light (little bruv) and am meeting Andy and Rob there too.By then Mark(lock up your daughters) Bennett will be resident PR guru in Arches..!
Ultimately, whatever time of the day or night you find yourself in, the beauty and magic of Lindos will find a way to your heart. A tiny place on this planet which I promise will stay with you for always. |
