Maritim Grand Azur: Acceptable 4 star tourist hotel if the price is low enough. by James S

In no way was this hotel 5 star by international standards. A 4 star tourist hotel maybe.

The room was clean and had the usual mini bar, but was generally unremarkable; particularly the TV had a very limited selection of TV channels, and there was no internet connection. For the internet one had to sit in the foyer or bar area where wireless internet was available free of charge. For most of my stay the top bed sheets was not wide enough to cover the width of the bed.

Being on half board I did not eat in the A la Carte restaurant. The food in the half board restaurant was good, but the restaurant and service lacked any style or ambience, and was probably the main reason I moved to another hotel after my 6 day stay ended and I needed to stay in Maramaris a little longer. I ate lunch in the beach bar one day only, and found it very disappointing. I got the impression the food had been cooked probably earlier in the week, and then only half re-heated for my benefit.

There was quite a lot of renovation work in progress in the hotel with old mini bar fridges stacked in the corridor just outside my room, and old and new sliding balcony doors being taken in and out. This was accompanied by some noise, but of a fairly low level, so not a great concern.

The hotel is a little too far from the town area to allow an easy walk to the shops and best restaurants, though there are plenty of mass tourism restaurants within an easy walk.

The staff were good, always courteous and helpful, though the phone in the room was not fixed after I reported it not working.

Despite my negative comments above, I must say that the cost for my 6 days stay was way below the cost of a 4 star hotel in most western European countries, and as such was very good value.

I visited Marmaris for the purpose of inspecting a boat in a nearby marina, and the hotel and room were adequate for this.

As a final comment, I very much liked Marmaris both as an attractive and interesting town, and for its very charming and friendly people, and I hope to return, but I'll be trying a different hotel next time.

Maybe

We booked flights (xl airways) and accommodation (Findmeaccomm) and transfer(Transfersonly) all separately and saved a fair bit as a family comprising of 2 A / 2C.

We have stayed at other very good 4* Iberostar hotels on Kos & Crete - so expectations were high...especially this being a 5*. however, we were a bit disappointed in this one to be honest - perhaps its a cultral thing ? However, we have since learned that this hotel no longer belongs to the Iberostar group as of beginning of 2007.

GOOD POINTS...

Our view from our room was truely lovely across the bayof Marmaris - one of the best we've ever enjoyed ! This was room 445 - although, a word of warning, we did have to ask for the two single bed to be made up into one !..which was easily accommodated. The room was on the fourth (top floor) - don't expect too much of a view from below this, as there are too many trees.

The grounds and pool area were immaculate. Rooms were clean, bed comfy, sheets & towels changed regularly.

This hotel has a super beach side bar - it makes a really pleasant place to have lunch and is not overly pricey..maybe a bit dearer than average but the quality of food is excellent. Be sure to ask for the kids menu though because you are not automatically given it.

Its located in a 'reasonably' quiet area of Marmaris considering it is right on the sea front- though the hotel next door could be noisy some nights. It is in a handy location to catch the Dolmus into town, it also has a supermarket, a McDonalds and also a small waterpark nearby.

BAD POINTS...

Room was a little dated ..however, nothing seriously wrong with it.
The pool chute is rather niffty, connecting the outdoor pool with the indoor via a long twisting rapid ride and series of plunge pools.....but is inherently Dangerous - it is of a concrete construction, with a paint surface, but lined with rock feaures (I kid you not) - it looks great, but the painted surface was badly worn (giving rise to nasty grazes) and a child could easily be knock unconscious before hitting the plunge pool at the bottom ! The lazy river also had a couple of decapitating bridges to negotiate ! The pool features are fun, but I doubt it would pass any UK safety inspection !

The pool chute was rarely turned on however, despite repeated requests from my son - probably just as well...this was a source of great annoyance to my 9 year old son though ! We got the distinct impresion there was a cost motive involved to this, especially since it was low season.

The outdoor pool was a little on the cold side (OK once you were in it) - the indoor pool sometimes was heated to quite a reasonable temperature but this was quite inconsistent - a pity - pool heating should have been turned on for both pools as it was October, and not the warmest, at that.

There were no toilets around the outside pool or beach bar area, meaning you had to go back into the hotel to find the nearest - not ideal if you have young kids.

The food was perfectly edible but there was nothing like the quality or variety that we had experienced in 4* Iberostar hotels before - very disappointed in this !

Also (unfortunately another Iberostar feature) there was an abundance of ferral cats at the outside tables - not helped of course by fellow diners feeding them - but something (as opposed to nothing) should have been done though - quite disgusting for 5* restaurant.

In general, this is certainly not the worse place you could choose in Marmaris - I think alot of my gripes are simply because we have been spoilt by the excellence of previous Iberostar hotels. I would recommend it but I would have serious concerns, if I were you, about kids playing on the water chute.

Finally, in fairness, I have to say that we enjoyed are stay less here because we really did not like Marmaris.....rather too Costa Del Sol / Blackpool for us I'm afraid....but would be great if that's your ideal holiday.

My family and I have stayed in marmaris 4 times. This time just my friend and I decided to try the grand azur. We had a suite which was so spacious. The food was wonderful, the entertainment good, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. I have stayed in a 4 star hotel in marmaris, but grand azur is far superior. The weather was hot (in the low 40s), but around the pool there was plenty of shade. I will be going back in the near future....

Stayed here in October/November 2004. excellent accomodation, amazing pool which overlooks a quite area of the bay, great scenery.

Lots of facilities on site, virtually everything you need, can be quite pricey though.

Oct/Nov not the best time for the weather and the resort is very quiet around that time with a lot of places already closed for the season. Depends on reason for your visit, but i can imagine it is absolutley beautiful in the summer months and well worth a visit, depending on your budget!

Hotel Grand Azure Reception

Hotel Grand Azure pool and gardens

An excellent first class hotel well worth it's 5*s. Extensive pool and gardens leading to it's own beach and man-made lagoon. Hotel has it's own casino and rooftop bar overlooking the bay of Marmaris. Accomodation and food was excellent. A 10 minute dolmus ride to the main resort.

    Maritim Grand Azur: all inclusive
11 May 2008 by Michelle Delahunty
is there an option to go all inclusive when you arrive at the maritim grand azur hotel
    >> Answer this question

    >>Answer 1 by Judy Benson (12 May)

Unfortunately this hotel has since changed from an Iberostar owned to a Maritim hotel since we visited - so I would not like to say what is available now (though it would not surprise me if it was).
When we went you could go all inclusive, but when we did the maths it really wasn't worth the extra they were asking, plus we did not want to be confined to the hotel all day !
