| Marseille Review: A weekend in sunny Marseilles | | Written by Monk-San on 13 Jan 2005 about a trip in Jul 2004.
| | Marseilles has had something of a reputation for being a bit rough. this is not helped by the Parisien view of France's 2nd city, which is about the same as a Londoner's view of Birmingham. Sorry, brummies, but this is an unfair comparison! Marseilles harbour is beautiful and the city is cleaner and safer than it was. There are areas where you woldn't want to go, but even late at night there are families strolling up and down La Canabiere and around the harbour, so it feels safe and inviting. Restaurants around the harbour are excellent, as is the local liqueur, the name of which escapes me, but I think it was lavender based. From the harbour you can take a boat out to Chateau D'If, famous for the escaping Count de Monte Cristo. |
