Mauritius Review: response to S Dawson

Very dissapointed by the comments from S Dawson. As a 2nd Generation Mauritian raised in the UK I think people like her have somewhat unrealistic expectations of Mauritius. It is all too easy to become lost amidst the 'lardy da' world of 5 star hotels and unquestionable luxury, while forgetting that essentially Mauritius is a very poor country, borderline 3rd world when compared to the UK or most of Western Europe.

Mauritius is a beautiful country, but if all you have come to do is be waited on hand and foot by some bell boys, may I make a suggestion? Try 5 star holidays to the Costa Bravo, or even Tenerife. They are about 7 hours closer (travel wise) and have just as many luxury swimming pools with 5 star facilities.

I always remind friends that Mauritius is far too beautiful a country to remain fixed in a hotel 24/7, it really is a waste of time and money. Of course there are standards of 'hygiene' which a Westerner may regard as being sub-standard, but then this is a country where 3/4 of the population survive on less than £20 a week. A fact which is clearly lost on some, perhaps due to the glamour of images like some of the regal apartments.

One of the things which makes Mauritius all the more remarkable, especially in the current climate we live in (especially the current situation in the UK post 7/7) is the religous and cultural harmoney which exists. This is a country where Muslims, Christians and Buddhists live in peace, an example to a much wider community. A fact clearly lost on the likes of S Dawson, someone from Belfast where for the best part of the 20th century 2 religions have unleashed a bloodshed which has infected beyond Ulster. Think the attrocities on the British mainland, the countless dead, the pointless misery.

Mauritius may not be wall to wall 5 star standards beyond the Hiltons and Le Tousseroks, and hygiene wise perhaps it has still someway to go. But in comparrison to much of the West, and in particular places like Belfast, it clearly can show the richer visitors a thing or two. If nothing else the country is a cultural and educational experience.

To witness Franco Mauritian Christians (caucasians) living in perfect harmoney with Indian Muslims and Hindus....Chinese Buddhists and the many more religous factions beside, it clearly is a miracle which is lost on some. In todays climate and testing times, it can be more of a reminder of a better way, if nothing else.
