Stayed 4 nights in March 2004 on an upgraded Yucatan Tour with First Choice. The tour content was excellent and we had a brilliant guide, who showed us how the locals lived as well as being a real mine of information on the archaeology.
The hotel is right at the entrance to the principal Mayan site and the grounds are paradise on earth, real rain forest, complete with monkeys, iguanas and the greatest variety of birds imaginable, around several idyllic pools.
BUT, the hotel service was lamentable, with sullen, ill-trained staff, lousy organisation and mediocre food.
They had no concept of service or what 'all-inclusive' meant, demanding payment for drinks etc. We had no hot water for 4 days. Senior management were invisible or non-existent to sort anything out.
The upgrade was a total waste of money - a two-crown boarding house in Blackpool would have given better service and food.
I would recommend the tour for anyone remotely interested in history, archaeology or other cultures, but travel 'Tourist Class'. The hotels in the interior simply cannot provide the service you pay for on an upgrade.
