Mayfair, Oxford Street, West End shopping

With in excess of 9 million visitors a year, Oxford Street is the UK’s number one shopping destination. The major department stores of John Lewis, Selfridges and Debenhams combine with the well known high street brands and newcomers such as the Spanish Zara and Mango stores to offer a world class shopping experience second to none.

The world famous Carnaby Street is enjoying something of a renaissance and all shoppers appreciate the uniqueness of the newly re-furbished Liberty just around the corner.

Designers shops line the Bond Street area which also includes New Bond Street, Savile Row and South Moulton Street and is home to more Royal Warrant holders than anywhere else in London.

Mayfair, Oxford Street, West End nightlife

Leicester Square is to nightlife what Oxford Street is to shopping. Here you’ll find a wide range of traditional pubs, contemporary bars, bars specialising in Flamenco or Karaoke, whatever you’re looking for you’ll find it in the West End.

The area is also famous for its cinemas and Leicester Square frequently plays host to the stars attending premieres at its prestigious venues and is of course adjacent to Covent Garden and Theatreland.

Soho is extremely popular with a young trendy crowd and has a vast choice of bars and clubs.

Mayfair, Oxford Street, West End restaurants

From the frantic Gerrard Street in Chinatown to the bustling Shepherd Market in Mayfair, you can be sure of the best choice of restaurants, cafés and brasseries anywhere in London. Firm favourites such as Planet Hollywood are as popular as ever or for something different try the Rainforest Café on Shaftsbury Avenue which recreates the sounds and sights of a tropical rainforest while offering a varied menu of American and tropical cuisine. While there aren’t that many eating places on Oxford Street, just step away from the crowds into one of the secluded alleys or passageways and you’ll come across some gems. St Christopher’s Place on the North side of Oxford Street is a delight in the summer with outside seating and impromptu jazz performances.

Mayfair, Oxford Street, West End attractions

Nelson’s Column dominates the now partially pedestrianised Trafalgar Square with the National Portrait Gallery on one side and Whitehall on the other. Walking through Leicester Square where you’ll find the excellent discounted Theatre Box office, you’ll come to Piccadilly Circus home of the Eros Statue and also the Trocadero which, with its indoor funfair and bowling station, is an ideal retreat on wet days.

Mayfair, Oxford Street, West End History and Culture

Originally open fields and hunting grounds north of the River Thames, Mayfair developed rapidly in the 1700’s by wealthy landowners notably the Grosvenor and Chesterfield families and by the 19th Century had become one of the most fashionable places to live in London.

Oxford Street, didn’t really come into prominence until the late 1800’s when development started in earnest, most notably the classically styled Selfridges Store at the Western end. We’ve combined these areas with Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar and Leicester Squares to form the West End section of the London district guides. The area is bordered by Bayswater to the west and Covent Garden to the East with Regents Park to the North.

Park Lane and Mayfair are home to some of the worlds most luxurious hotels such as the Dorchester, the Hilton and the newly refurbished Brown's Hotel which is part of the Rocco Forte collection.
