Mercure Coralia Luxor: Excellent Hotel by Louise Houbart - Hadfield

My husband and I stayed at this hotel between May 16th - May 23rd 2005

First impressions: the lobby is very impressive, with a 'Rameses II' theme. There is a security guard and scanner by the front door, but you quickly get used to this. The reception staff are quite helpful, and money changing and safety deposit facilities are available. There is also an ATM, which takes all the usual cards, Cirrus, Mastercard, Visa... The various tour operator boards are clearly displayed, with accurate and up-to-date information. There are also a number of shops in a small arcade: Jewellers, Bookshop, Giftshop, Perfume shop etc. Prices are slightly higher than outside, but haggling is expected...

Room: A good size, not huge, with two single beds. Very comfortable, if you like your bed firm! If you get a Nile view room the scene from your balcony will take some beating! The TV has the usual CNN, Sports channel, plus 2 english movie channels. There is also a small fridge which is free to use. The airconditioning is very efficient, and quickly cools the room down. The bathroom is a good size, with both bath and shower, and there is always plenty of hot water. Storage space is adequate, with both cupboards and drawers. The cleaners come everyday, replacing towels, and sheets are changed 3 or 4 times a week.

Restaurants: There are 5 located in the hotel. Le Champollion and Le Bistrot are snack bars which are both located on the same floor as the lobby and serve mainly the same dishes; Dakka, which serves Italian food and is located next to the pool; Gorna, which is on the mezzanine floor and is where the buffet breakfast and evening meal is served and finally Le Flamboyant which is a French restaurant on the mezzanine floor.
We ate at all but the Le Flamboyant - the food in the snack bars is OK, nothing special and a lot of the time is only lukewarm and the chips could do with cooking longer! The breakfast buffet in Gorna is probably the best meal of the day, with a large selection of cereals, toasts, cooked food, salads - and even a chef who will cook eggs to your individual order! There is a great view of the Corniche, if you can get a table by the windows.
Dakka is where the 'Egyptian' night is held (Thursday) This consists of the usual bellydancing, egyptian dancers etc and is good value for money. We had 2 soft drinks each, the meal, coffee and a bottle of wine, all for £LE 400 (approx 38 pounds sterling) Your picture can be taken with the dancers and delivered to you the next day for £LE 20 each.

Bars: Only went to the El Sarab bar, which is located in the lobby (apparently there are 2 others) Prices aren't too bad, especially if you stick to the local Stella, which you soon get a taste for! There is entertainment every night: Usually local singers doing songs from the last 30 years. It is a bit disconcerting though to hear 2 Egyptian men sing 'Something Stupid' to each other!

Pool: A very good size, with half shallow, half deep. There is a also a volleyball net which was being enthusiastically used! Towels are provided, and there are plenty of sunbeds...food and drink from the snack bars can also be delivered to your bed! There are good changing facilities, if you want to spend time on your last day by the pool after checking out at 12pm.

All in all I would highly recommend this hotel, with my only gripe being the food in the snack bars could be better. The staff are warm and friendly, and the service is usually very good.

we stayed at the Etap as the locals call it last May and I would not hesitate to go back. In fact I keep harping on to my other half about it. We cruised the Nile for the first week and stayed in the Etap the 2nd. It was concenient for all the local attractions, eg museum and temples. The room, staff and surroundings were excellent. Cannot wait till I get back there

The hotel was excellent, the room was air conditioning and following advice from a previous entry we booked a nile view room which was on the top floor and the view was unforgettable. The weather was extrememly hot 120degrees daily. The pool was clean and staff were very friendly and helpful. At first the attention you are given for felucca rides, taxi or in shops was off putting but a firm no would suffice and they would leave you alone. The trips to the VofKings and Queens were fantastic, please ensure you carry plenty of water. The most memorable time we had was the balloon ride over the west bank at 6am it was an experience that will live in our hearts and minds forever, a must for all and a good price at £135 a couple, you are up for at least an hour floating effortlessly over tombs, houses, temples.
Things inside the Hotel were much more expensive than outside, but the saving in reality of English pounds was negligible.
A good tip is use the organised trips as Insurance is included and you have air conditioned coaches and a very well spoken and informative qualified guide. If you go by taxi, the window is the a/c, and they certainly are not very qualified to guide.
Always set the price before you go in any taxi and on any felluca ride. Next year we are going back to Egypt to the Pyramids and Cairo with a red sea diving expedition. A wonderful safe friendly place to holiday. Not for kids though.

Have to agree with the other two reviews here we stayed from the 7/5/03 till 14/5/03 staff were fantastic rooms clean, large and comfortable. We found we got more enjoyment from walking to and from local attractions and shops and yes the locals were quite persistent with their offers of taxi/caleche/fellucca rides but if you keep a smile on your face, remembered that they are trying to feed their wives and kids and said a firm but polite no they would leave you alone.I would recommend to everyone to upgrade to a nile view room, from your balcony straight across the nile you can see hatchepsuts temple (with a decent camera with a good zoom you can get a wonderful photo) I have dreamed of going toegypt since i was 7 (27 yrs ago) and when we walked out onto our balcony for the 1st time i was flooded with emotion. i saw the temple and realised my dream had come true so for anyone who has the same dream the price of a nile view is, well priceless !
