Michelangelo: OK but would not return - July 2005 by Derek Morris |
| Posted 04 August 2005 about a visit in June 2005 | Overall rating: 6.0 |
We enjoyed our holiday in July 2005 but would prefer to return to the likes of Majorca as it caters more for British tourists than Salou. We felt that a lot of Spanish went to Salou and that it was more geared up for them (we were surprised at how little the English language was used).
Reus airport was only about 20 minutes from the hotel so transfer was no hassle. Note Reus airport is very small and was a bit chaotic when we were heading for home at the end of our holiday.
The Michelangelo aparthotel is in a built up area of Salou, 1 block from the beach (2 minutes walk). Had a 2 bed apartment which was spacious enough for the 6 of us (no double bed though). The kitchen utensils were poor and the handle was falling of the kettle (but we got a new one when it did actually fall off). The bathroom door had a habit of locking by itself and requiring the maintenance guy to unlock with a key (we decided not to close the door anymore after our son was locked in for the 2nd time). We also found we were disturbed by noise outside every night. Our room was to the front of the hotel, may be OK if at the rear overlooking the pool.
On the plus side, the rooms were cleaned daily, towels changed daily, sheets changed every 2 days. The balcony was excellent, very large with 2 tables and 6 chairs.
The bar area was pretty basic and lacked any atmosphere. All the entertainment was in Spanish.
The pool was OK although the sun did not really hit the pool area until 11.30am due to the buildings around. The sun had pretty much left the pool area by 19.00. There is no poolside bar either. The lifeguard also had a habit of checking some people and not others for various things, eg diving, playing with balls in the pool. She was so inconsistent she was best ignored!
The games room was pretty much as you'd expect. 2 pool tables (2 euros), air hockey (1 euro), 4 machines (1 euro or 50 cents). They also had internet access at 50 cents per 5 minutes. There was also crazy golf beside the pool but this was out of use when we there there - it was in a bad state of repair but I do not know if they intend to refurbish it.
We only used the buffet restaurant once. Again a lot of things were for the Spanish palette. Food was lukewarm rather than hot. The fruit was not very ripe.
Salou itself has a lovely beach and promenade. Plenty shops / bars, cafes/restaurants. Our favourite restaurants were Rosie's Return and Ye Old Brown Cow which had lovely traditional british food. Don't miss Sunday lunch at Rosie's Return which was superb and fantastic value at less than 9 Euros for main course and dessert.
There are plenty of places which have Sky Sports but if you're looking for Setanta for the SPL then the only place we found was Danny Boys bar.
We visited Unviersal Sudios Port Aventura a number of times as we had 14 day tickets (for the price of 3 days - a special offer through Keith Prowse before we left home)and enjoyed the flexibility this gave us. If you've been to the Florida theme parks, then this is not as good. I like the simulator rides in Florida but Port Aventura only has 1 (Sea Odyssey) and it's pretty poor. The Stampida rollercoaster is good tho' and worth using your Express ticket for this. It reminds me of the Grand National rollercoaster at Blackpool. The Dragon Khan coaster with it's 8 loops is really good too but not as popular as Stampida.
We also made one visit to Universal's Caribe Water Park which is next door to Port Aventura. Now, I'm not normally keen on these places as I usually get burnt to a cinder. However, this is the best water park I've been to. I particularly liked the fact that they have a covered area with pool and slides so you do not need to be out in the sun all the time. The play area for younger kids was also excellent. You really could spend the day at this water park.
Finally, we went for a boat trip one morning called Ocean Wave. This proved to be an excellent trip. We were perhaps furtunate that there were only about 20 people on the boat which can hold 200. Having departed from Cambrils, we sailed up to La Pineda where we dropped anchor. You then had the opportunity to swim in the sea of the back of the boat. Lifejackets were available too. Because there were so few people the kids who were swimming also got a ride in the powered lifeboat so they were whizzing around in that too - this was a real bonus for them. There was a free bar on the boat too - beer was OK but the soft drinks were cheap pop from 2 litre plastic bottles rather than Coke / Fanta etc.
All in all, we enjoyed our holiday but found the area too Spanish for our liking. This would be our main reason for not returning. If we were to return to Salou, we would not go back to the Michelangelo.

Michelangelo: Michelangleo by *JoJo* |

This hotel was lovely. The rooms were well furnished and clean, for 2 adults and 3 children we had plenty of space and plenty of beds. The reception staff were all very friendly and the kids entertainers were great too!
