Neither of us had been to Mallorca for 30 years and I had never been to Cala SV, but my wife had stayed in the Hotel Cala SV in 1975 and been so impressed by the location of the Molins that she had wanted to stay there and had nurtured this thought for 30 years!

First impressions on arrival were not so good - we had done a cruise for our first week and relished the close company, entertainment and buzz of the ship. Although we had planned it this way to have a laid-back week after a hectic week, it was still a culture shock to be dropped off the transfer coach outside an absolutely deserted hotel. I had injured my back on the cruise, so had to request assistance with the luggage. Although this was forthcoming (by the only apparent member of staff- the Receptionist) I felt it should have been a routine feature of the service for a 4 star hotel - especially at this price! However, the room furnishings, decor and view from the balcony were superb and the extensive public areas of the hotel were equally impressive. But where were all the people?
We quickly unpacked and headed for the nearest bar/restaurant, just as the heavens opened in a cloudburst which lasted over two hours. We eventually paddled back to the hotel the worse for wear in the late afternoon.
Dinner was 19.45 to 21.30. We like to eat late, but the few other guests we saw all piled in as soon as they opened the doors. We decided not to 'push it' the first night and went in at 20.30, still the last by far. There were only about 20 guests, in a hotel of 200 or so rooms and we were all herded into one corner of the large dining room. We were shown to a pre-allocated table in a position we did not particularly like. The buffet starters were a bit sparse in choice and quantity but ok in quality. The main course choice was good and well-cooked and we have never had such a good desert choice, including lots of healthy stewed fruits and a good cheese selection.
There were only three people in the bar after dinner, so we went to our room.
The following morning, at breakfast, we first realised that we had been allocated that table for the whole week and said we wanted to move. This caused consternation - not least amongst the other guests, most of whom were regular repeat visitors. Refusing to accept that "it is not possible senor" we were moved the next night to a prime window seat, which we then kept for the rest of our stay. The regular guests at this point divided between hatred and admiration - either of which was better than their originally ignoring us.
It all got better from then on. The weather settled ; a few more new people came in (although almost all were repeat visitors) the food got even better and we were included in conversation. The last 5 days were great and we did not want to come home.
Would we go there again? No - on several counts. Firstly we are just not keen on Spain - we prefer Greece. Secondly, although we wanted peace & quiet, it was just too dead. Thirdly, although the decor and food were first rate, it was hugely expensive and compares badly, value for money, with many places we have stayed in the Canaries or Greece. In fact, a week there costs more than the basic cabin price for the cruise and that is in a totally different league.
