Mutiara Beach: Fantastic Hotel, Beach & Atmosphere! by Spannerette
Posted 14 June 2006 about a visit in December 2002
Trip was for:
Couple
Holiday

Visit again?
Definitely

I have to say Mutiara Beach Hotel - Penang is one of the most beautiful romantic places that we have ever had the great fortune to holiday and the Mutiara Beach Hotel was fantastic in every sense of the word. Although we were very concerned about the limitations for my husbands wheelchair, (as disabled are not catered for at all in Malaysia) the Mutiara proved to be no problem and access to every part of the hotel including the beach front was fantastic which is just as well as the Mutiara was someway what appeared to be going up a mountain, and not really that close to any shops, slightly remote, but as it was 2001 when we visited it is probable that the area is now more populated with more hotels etc....

This hotel is/or was perched on the edge of the jungle with stunning oceanic views to the rear of the hotel and jungle views over the rest. Continuing on the road past the Mutiara is just the jungle! Initially the taxi ride from the airport was the usual for Malaysia with small streets encompassed with little shops etc and markets. A lot of the little old towns are not suitable for wheelchairs but in the cities the shopping centres are multi-storey with plenty of lifts and spacious stores to manoeuvre your wheelchair.

The Mutiara is first class elegance through and through and I was glad that I bought a few very nice clothes for the evening with me, as I would have been out of place in the restaurants which the hotel boasts. Although casual wear is the norm it is a good idea to take a few special outfits with you as you never know who you are going to meet, or where you are going to end up dining. A lot of class in some of these places and first class cuisine and service to go with it.

Breakfasts were spent partially alfresco with a trio band playing music and breakfast tables facing the very generous swimming pools and oceanic views with palm trees and exotic sprays of scented flowers everywhere! Absolutely fantastic, it certainly beat a previous trip to Hawaii by far!! The breakfast was your choice of anything you wished and as much as you wished. The wallet certainly took a bashing as this is not a cheap place! You will need the old plastic in abundance in this country!

This was just one stop on our trip and was not booked through a travel agent!

The rooms were luxurious in every detail, with stunning views and a bathroom to die for. His and hers all the way through! Room amenities were lacking nothing and in fact excelled in every way. Perfumed soaps and toiletries of very good quality, independent walk in shower areas in the very large bathroom and it tickled me that I could access the bathroom through the wardrobe also, although that was meant for clothing reasons which is obvious! I was delighted that everything was thought of from bathrobes, hairdryers to a well stocked drinks cabinet! Although it was a twin room, both beds were at least queen size.

Good air conditioning and the usual colour TVs, telephone etc etc etc....... if you have an open wallet you will enjoy every bit of this hotel and surrounding areas including the hire of a driver for the time you are there for site seeing. Lots and lots and lots of things to see, just ask the driver! We did not create an itinerary, we just went - and experienced - and were thoroughly happy with everything and amazed at everything we saw and everywhere we went! Needless to say if the wallet says yes we would go back over and over again. Come on LOTTERY!

We were very lucky this hotel was OK for the wheelchair, but you need a driver to get you around, and major cities like Kuala Lumpur are good for the wheelchair. But unless in a central area, it is too hot to push around for long distances as the metal on the chair becomes easily heated to the touch and of course it is a very hot place!

The people are extremely friendly and polite and helpful and seem to talk about Maggie Thatcher a lot as she helped Malaysia in the past quite a lot! You have to remember that the people are quite poverty stricken and a lot live in tin houses etc... and work in the lap of luxury!

Wonderful country and wonderful people!!
