Novotel Centre: Would be nice if the manager was more polite by Helen Lay |
| Posted 02 July 2007 about a visit in June 2007 | Overall rating: 6.0 |
I stayed here for 4 nights to attend a conference at the end of June. This city is very popular for conferences, and hotels get booked up very quickly, so I was glad to have been able to book this centrally-located hotel at a reasonable price of around £80 a night. However, I have three issues with the hotel.
The first, and most annoying, issue was the manager. I couldn't sleep the first night because the room was very hot and stuffy (even though the temperature outside was cool during the day, at around 20C). I complained, and was told that they were installing air conditioning in rooms and was asked if I could sleep with my window open. That didn't work because insects flew in and with a lack of breeze, the room remained hot. I complained again the next morning, and was told that they'd see if something can be done. However, that evening when I went back, nothing had been done so I went to the reception again. The manager, being quintessentially French, spoke to his colleage in French (not knowing that I speak French too) and complained that it wasn't their responsibility to do anything. What?! Are they not a hotel?! After a long discussion and insisting that he came to my room to check, he gruntled. He then asked why I couldn't just leave the window open during the day, and gruntled again when I said that I didn't feel safe doing that. Anyway, like squeezing blood out of a stone, he gave in and provided me with a fan that evening and I managed to sleep for the first time in 60 hours!
The second and third are minor issues. There was a funny sewage smell coming out of the taps when you turn on the water. It was a bit unnerving using that water to brush my teeth so I bought mineral water and used that instead. The third is that the cleaners didn't seem to clean the room properly as the cup I used wasn't changed during the four day stay.
On the positive note, I found the room service adequate (7 euros for a cheese plate with rolls), the breakfast good (freshly cut fruit, a range of bread, hot and cold dishes and yogurt, as well as Actimel active drinks), and the location was excellent (just a few minutes from the main square).
If the manager gave me less of what I now term the "French welcome", it would have been nice! I understand that they are doing something about the air conditioning, but they could be a bit more adaptable to their customers' needs, particularly that of sleep which I would think is the primary purpose of hotels!
