My and my sister travelled to Salou in late June 2008 for a cheap late getaway. We booked through Low cost beds for the accommodation and left it til last minute, booking 2 weeks before travel. We got a reasonable price considering we paid for Half Board.

We flew with Ryanair and got a taxi to our hotel, as our flight was a day flight we had no problems getting a taxi. Upon arrival at the hotel we were told that we could not check in and had to hang around for 15 minutes and keep asking at reception incase they forgot we were there. It was busy at reception when we arrived and mainly with German customers. We didnt see any British travellers until the following day actually around the pool!

The reception staff seemed a little hassled but were pleasent and checked us in when they could. Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the road on the 4th floor. The room was small but kept clean and the bathroom was a reasonable size as there was just the 2 of us.

We had a problem with the air conditioning unit in the room which we were told is centrally operated by the hotel and it was not hot enough to have it on, despite it reaching high 20 early 30 degrees!

The room we stayed at was quite noisy as it was overlooking the road, we managed to sleep through any traffic apart from one night when Spain won the football and all the Spanish got in their cars and drove in convoy beeping and waving flags until early hours of the morning!

The pool area was generally clean and if you got up before breakfast and got your sunloungers early then there was no problems. There was a shop on site selling newspapers, sweets and inflatables etc.

The breakfast was the same every day, there was a chef to cook you omlettes, sausages etc and the rest was buffet style but quite repetative and we ended up eating toast for the week really. There was some fresh fruit and pastries also. There were waitresses who would come once you found a seat and take your drink orders and you pay for them on the way out with the reciept from the waitress.

Dinner was not the best I've ever seen, very repetative and not much choice. There was a different meat almost every night but as my sister is vegetarian there was not much choice for her so chips it was for her every night! There was once again at dinner a chef to cook burgers and sausages etc but the queue to get to him was always a long and slow one. I was not impressed with the food at the hotel.

There are plenty of other places to eat or to grab some lunch just outside the hotel anyway. There is a bar opposite the hotel called the ski hut which seems to be german run but thomas cook would start their bar crawl from there too which we joined in once. The crawl went from the ski hut outside the hotel and straight down the road into the centre stopping at various bars, one that i would recommed was Kiss which is just before you get to the centre. The crawl ended up at the Bus Stop, right in town which played mainly 80's tunes. There is also a bar next door with a James Bond theme which we did not visit but we were told it was an amazing night in there. Jimmys bar is also a bit out of the way, down the street next to the Ski Hut but that is run by an English man and has kareoke and also reasonably priced drinks in there.

Another place we found that also had the cheapest drinks about was Idols, themed on the TV show. They had good entertainment in there too and every night they would do a quiz, name that tune, or kareoke. We found that alcoholic drinks were not the cheapest in Salou costing approx 5 euros in most places depeding on what you drink but we found that Idols would do some good deals 2 4 1 on cocktails at 5 euros and after the quiz they would have 30 minutes or buy one get one free on everything behind the bar.

The main beach would get quite crowded in the day and we went to the smaller beach located nearer to the hotel, we would go down early in the morning and stay until after lunch as it would start to get busy then.

Down by the smaller beach there is also a few bars located downstairs and serving toasties etc which were reasonably priced and also not far from the beach. Another bar/cafe is the Rovers Return themed on Coronation Street, family oriented pub which seemed to get the people in of a night time.

We went to Port Aventura and caught the bus from right outside the hotel which takes you right into the park. There are a few good big rides there but compared to somewhere like Alton Towers I wasnt as impressed. It was a lot smaller than I thought it would be and the queues were also ridiculous (as you expect from a theme park though really!). The newest ride when we went was Furious Baco, we went on this one although this queue was obviously the longest and it also broke down quite a bit!

The other big rides are Dragon Khan which has 8 loops and a definate must go on when you are there and Hukhran Condor which is a tall tower which takes you up slowly and then drops you from the top, excellent photos on this one too! Choices of places to eat at the park were very limited though, small outlets selling hotdogs, chips, nuggets etc and then larger restaurant types which were a little pricey.

We used the Port Aventura train to get back to the hotel which went round the houses a little but was nice to see a bit more of the resort and it stopped right outside the hotel again. I would recommend you visit Port Aventura if you are going to Salou but it is a little overpriced I would say especially if you are a family with children it can be an expensive day out.

There is also daily bus trips into Barcelona from the bus stop outside the hotel but we did not go on them but that would be another day out. Everytime you step out of the hotel you get handed another bus timetable advertising all of the trips available anyway.

There is also a small market up the road from the hotel which opens in the evening which sells handmade items and jewerlly, worth a wander around but you can find the same things cheaper in the souvenier shops.

Our flight home was not until late evening so we were out of our room for 11am and kept our bags in the locked room by reception but to get your bags back you just had to ask reception to open the lock so you could walk in so dont think it was very secure. We spent most of our last day in the town and only returned to the hotel to get our taxi to the airport. The airport departures is very small although it looks like there was some work going on, hopefully to extend it! There is one small duty free shop and a food place at the airport.

I dont think I would go back to Salou after my stay at the Oasis Park as I don't think there is enough to do and see. There were also nicer looking hotels closer to the beach and the centre.
