Last year we visited this hotel for one week and loved every minute so we decided to return this year for two weeks. It is a bit out of the way but buses and taxis stop right outside so it isn’t as if you are cut off.

Rooms
The hotel is all inclusive and is rated 4 star but I really do not think it deserves this rating. The rooms are laid out in almost a crescent shape around the pool area. Every room has a sea view and large balcony or terrace. The air conditioned room has twin beds, desk area with tv, mini fridge stocked regularly with bottled water (last year they provided soft drinks and beer as well), a small table and two chairs.
The dressing/washing area houses a huge wardrobe with sliding mirrored doors. There are 2 sinks with full width mirrors above the sinks and shaving mirror and hairdryer. The bathroom has wc, bidet, bath with shower over.

Restaurants
The main restaurant is on the lower ground floor and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food is varied and you rarely have to queue for a table. They have themed evenings each week where you can choose from the grill but all the regular choices are also available. There is a wide variety to choose from for main courses and desserts and it is buffet service. You can also help yourself to wine, beer, soft drinks, water or coffee with or after your meal.

Two other restaurants The Grill and The Italian are in the grounds and these have limited opening times. Tables must be booked with the head waiter in the main restaurant and you are only allowed to visit once per week. During our 2 weeks stay we were unable to get a booking however last year we managed to visit both but found they did not serve anything different from the main restaurant.

The Pool Bar snack area offers late continental breakfast, sandwiches, salad, ice cream and ice lollies all day from 10.00am – 5.30pm and between 12.00 and 3.00 you can get hot food, chicken, chips, burgers, fish, pasta, pizza etc all buffet. The bar also serves drinks from 10.00 – 6.00 and you help yourself to wine, sangria, hot drinks, soft drinks and water.

Bars
There are 2 more bars in the lounge but these are only open after the Pool Bar closes and remain open until midnight. The Barley Bar in the lounge serves afternoon tea, coffee, cappuccino and snacks and also serves early morning breakfast for those with early flights. The bars offer waiter or walk up service and a wide variety of drinks including international brands.

The lounge hosts everything from live entertainment and music to the kiddies disco. The décor hints of Moroccan with mosaic tiled fountains in the centre of the room, Bedouin style tented bar and stage but the furniture is cane and cushioned. It did look a little grubby this year.

Pools
There are two main pools but they are so shaped that they really look like one. They are immaculately clean and well cared for. The pool area is spotlessly clean and the pool attendant constantly checks the very large area for litter etc. Sunbeds and parasols are free as are pool towels but a 10 euros deposit per person is required. It really isn’t necessary to try to book your bed early and anyway if you do the pool attendant will take off your towel. It was quite amusing watching the antics of the guests when they discovered someone else lying on ‘their’ bed and their towels nowhere to be seen.
There is also a kiddies pool and only just opened, another small pool surrounded by a lovely grassed area situated behind the building housing the kiddies club. This is not just a kiddies pool and not many of the guests knew of its existence. It was very quiet and usually only had a couple of people there.

Scuba diving lessons are held in the pool weekly.

Activities
Football/volleyball/basketball court, 2 tennis courts, mini golf, petanque, archery, pistol and rifle shooting, darts, table tennis, pool, shuffleboard. The entertainment team hold daily competitions in most of the above for both children and adults and there is a kiddies club for the young ones.

Entertainment
Apart from the daily games above there is also water aerobics and a weekly cocktail party around the pool and a weekly fashion show around the pool.

A children’s disco was held in the lounge each evening before the main entertainment and then they would be taken into the conference room to watch a film but the majority of them would come straight back out into the lounge.

Evening entertainment varied from the really good to the really awful. There were lots of very young children running around wildly during the evening and it was a miracle that the waiters managed to dodge the slalom of bodies without spilling the meticulously stacked trays. Eventually the entertainment manager asked each evening that the children left after 11.00pm but the majority of the families ignored this request.

Other facilities
Gym, sauna and massage, hairdressers, gift shop and newspapers.

Summing Up
We had a room in a different part of the hotel on our most recent visit and it was not as nice as last time. Whether it was down to the maid or not I don’t know but it certainly was not as clean. Little things which had added to the comfort and appearance of the room last time were missing this time ie the bed covers did not match curtains, the room did not seem as big as before and the standard of housekeeping was extremely poor. The beds were definitely not as comfortable as on our previous visit and the noise from guests next door, above and below was intolerable. These observations might appear trivial but when comparing with our previous visit they really make a difference. We are not fastidious by any means but the room overall looked dirty with badly stained carpet and curtains which stank of nicotine. The bath was chipped and the brown marble floor in the washing/dressing area and bathroom was rarely cleaned. The large balcony did not appear to have been cleaned since our arrival and if our ‘smalls’ were blown from the chair where they had been put to dry, onto the tiles, they would be covered in dust.

Although we were offered a wide choice each day in the main restaurant, it was repeated over and over again so eventually it did not appeal. The Pool Bar snack area also offered exactly the same choice every day. The variety of international brands was far fewer this visit and although some of the staff was absolutely delightful some were sour faced and unhelpful. (But then perhaps I would be too considering the way some guests treated them). The hot and cold drinks dispensers in the restaurant, bar, lounge, and pool bar were constantly out of order.

The toilet areas were in need of a revamp and were always swimming and smelly.

Quite a few of the guests we spoke to said they had been before and thought it was definitely on the decline, which is a shame because last year it was really, really nice.

Occidental Allegro Oasis: Our Opinion by Barzey
Posted 18 February 2002
We stayed at this Hotel in September 2001 and found the hotel, food, rooms, amenities and staff excellent. In fact the food was so good we did not bother to eat out for an evening meal once (and that IS a first) Would certainly go again. Good point about the beach though, it is very small and there did not seem to be much entertainment in the area. The very few places that did have live entertainment were naturally packed out early. Been to all the Canaries over the years and found Lanzarote to be our favourite, however we prefer Puerto-Del-Carmen.
