Occidental Allegro Punta Cana: Affordable holiday that we enjoyed to the fullest! by Rita Langis |
| Posted 01 March 2008 about a visit in April 2007 | Overall rating: 9.4 |
We stayed at Occidental Allegro Punta Cana in April of 2007. Weather was fantastic; never had a drop of rain the entire week we were vacationing! Bring lots of sunblock and AFTERSUN!!!
FLIGHT to/from Punta Cana - West Jet planes are sooo tiny; however, in a little over 5 hrs (straight flight) ; we were in Punta Cana..This airport is a ; hut-style airport; locals to greet you in the DR colours..really cool! AIR TRANSAT shuttle was awaiting us ; upon arrival to bring us to the resort. Great service, and very comical guide to keep us entertained on our way to the resort.
CHECK IN - This went fairly quickly - an entire bus load of us arriving late at nite; and within 30 min ; we were in our rooms - our luggage arrived shortly after settling in our rooms; due to the fantastic service.
GROUNDS/LANDSCAPING - Unbeleivably beautiful..constantly being upkept by staff..very clean..there are so many types of plants/trees/flowers; it was an eye-catcher for sure! Great pics !!
FOOD - Food was fantastic - I preferred the omelettes in mornings; and pasta in evenings ; at the buffet. For lunchtime - we preferred the beach grill; where they served hamburgers, hotdogs, fries, nachos, pizza; as well as a mini-buffet version of the main buffet (pork chops, rice, chicken, etc)
DRINKS - We've been to a few other resorts and found the drinks at the ALLEGRO to be superior!! Lots of choices..they even have a different ..and I did not find ONE I did not like! For evening drinks; while we waited to go to dinner - we found a bar close to the buffet restaurant that served anything you wanted - from a kaluha and milk (white cow) to vodka and OJ (screwdriver). Not all resorts have that option! WARNING - be careful in drinking too many drinks containing coconut milk..it's a laxative..therefore; is suggested to drink in moderation only..
ROOMS - We had read reviews before going and had gotten a few tips..alot of small bugs in rooms (sorta like a small small flea or something)..these bugs are coming from the sink and bathtub..therefore; you simply have to plug the drains with kleenex/toilet paper; to prevent them from crawling up the pipes and into the room..once we did this, we saw one here n there; but, not too bad..Bed was really comforable (king size)..rooms / buildings are older (not anything like your modern Holiday Inn); however, clean..they could use a nice paint job however.. Very quiet at nite..therefore; no worries for sleeping, when u're due for it! :) Do not forget to pay for usage of the safe in your room; we found this quite handy for our passports, personal belongings; including our expensive digi-cam, we purchased for our vacation pics! HUGE closet space , ceramic tiles, patio door - with balcony to sit outside for a nite-cap..
BEACH - AWESOME!! beautiful white powder sands..nice walking area as well ; along the shore..water was so beautiful ; we were swimming on a daily basis at 8:30 am!!! Very warm!!! Alot of topless women on this beach; therefore, if you're not to this sort of attire (hehe); this may not be the place for you. My husband and myself are comfortable with certain customs, such as this - and were not offended..(then again, whose husband would be haha) Lots of chairs..however; hubby went out early in the morning to save chairs where the huts were on the beach; while I got prepared. Had we not done this; chances of getting a chair under a bit of shade were fairly nil!
ENTERTAINMENT - Great ppl..constantly bringing on the comedy on the beach scene, pool scene; as well as the nitely entertainment aspect of it all..They also tend to want to involve the audience in their shows; therefore, if this is not your thing..do not sit up in front row! hehe
EXCURSION - We decided to take one afternoon to go on a catamaran excursion..well worth it..we had an absolute blast!!! We were gone all afternoon..we started by going to swim with the stingrays and sharks (YES - sharks!!) you can see the cages from the resort; as a matter of fact..we also went for a catamaran ride and had drinks in an area where water was very shallow..drinks were not scarce on this excursion..our tour included plenty of rum! This tour in particular; they made their own famous drink recipe..what did it include?? yep..u got it..rum and more rum! I'm not really a rum drinker; however, with the coconut milk and other ingredients; it was quite delicious!
GUESTS - We met alot of canadians at this resort..some we even kept in touch with; via email upon our return home..PPl were so friendly and outgoing..alot of acquaintances !!!
STAFF - cant say enough for these ppl..they work so hard all day and all nite long ; to enable us all to have an enjoyable vacation within their establishment. Dont forget..a tip goes a long way!! We usually purchase a bunch of we give out as tips..Every morning; before leaving our room; we left something special for our cleaning lady; plus a few american dollars..and..we always made sure we left a little gift for her children; as they are important as well..
SUGGESTIONS for gifts - Sample size shampoo, conditioners, lotions, soaps, toothpaste, mouthwash (these are imported and therefore; VERY expensive to purchase; therefore, they appreciate alot!)...We always leave a bag of candies on a daily basis (butterscotch, peppermints,etc)..Kids gifts - barrets, colouring books, crayons, pencils, shoe laces, tonka cars, stickers.. Women love perfumes as well..you can always find sample perfumes here n there.. Like I say..a little gift for us; as we take it for granted these necessities are reasonably priced. For the Dominicans; it is a luxary they appreciate !!! We always make sure , on the last day we are at our buffet restaurant - that we tip at least a 10.00 or 20.00 to our waiter who served us constantly - the one who was constantly ready to serve our morning coffee,etc..
This is a very affordable holiday - we booked it 3 wks prior to departure (last min deals are the best thru your travel agent) - it is considered an older resort; however a very affordable and comfortable family resort as well!
