Optimist: pool view from room C51 on 10/04/2005

My two cousins and I have just returned from a lovely week at the Optimist apartments. After reading a lot of bad reviews about the apartments we were rather apprehensive about our week in tenerife. However, all our fears were unfounded!
Upon arrival at 11pm, the receptionist gave us our room key and a map and sent us on our way... up loads of stairs with a huge suite case each. Half an hour, 5 flights of stairs and 6 aching arms later we finally found our room. On entrance the room was clean, spacious and well equipt (the 2 bedroom apartments even have a big dining table in them). The decor is a little out dated but that's not the end of the world. The safe in the bedroomis very big and easy to operate, you can even for your duty free fags and booze in it (depending on how much you're bringing back of course) camcorders etc. would be no probs either. There are black out shutters in the bedrooms so you, or little kids, can easily have a little nap during the day. If your apartment is on the right hand side the main road is quite noisy at night. So, if you're a light sleeper just ask for a room on the left.
The only other complaint i we had was that the lighting wasn't very good for putting make up on so girlies just remember to get ready while it's still light outside!!
The apartments are just a 5 minute walk away from Veronica's and Starco's, but the walk is lined with bars and restaurants so it often takes a lot longer than that to get there. We found a gorgeous chinese buffet resturant called Merlin. [If you turn right out of the apartments and walk about 100m you'll see an alley way on your left hand side 'lizard alley' (because there's always loads of lizards down there). Go down there, to the end and down the steps. This brings you into the city cenre shopping center. The Merlin is upstairs in the front right corner...you can't miss it]. It's only 5.50 euros (£3 ish) for as much as you want. they have crispy duck, sweet n sour, ribs, satay but to name a few. GO THERE! it's beter to go at 5 when it first opens becase the food is fresh.

There are plenty of sunbeds round the pool, which is really clean and well kept. there are gardeners and cleaners about all day. The food in the pool bar is well priced and is very nice too. Water and pop is very cheap from the bar and is on sale at reception 24/7. The bar/ 'restaurant' shuts on Sundays, as do a lot of shops n stuff in Las Americas.
Our room was cleaned every other day- towels and bedding changed, they even washed our pots!!
There is a new hotel being built right beside the Optimist and there's a large crane. Don't be worried you hardly even notice it, they ring a bell for them to stop and start work every now and again but like i say, it's no bother.
This hotel is not suitable for anyone who has difficulty walking up or down stairs as there are no lifts or wheelchair access but quite a lot of steps.
As a base to wash, cook occasionally and sleep, for the price these apartments are fantastic!
I would stay in the Optimist again without a doubt.

Just another quick tip, go to LEONARDO's bar. It's great fun with Mea and Marc- fantastic voices and hilarious to boot. at 3 euros a drink it's quite cheap too. They're on 10-12 wed to mon. try it out!

i went to the optimist apartments last week. when we arrived il have to agree with andrew below its what you expect for 3* accomodation. our 2 person apartment was spacious clean and perfect for its purpose. if your the kind of person that wastes their holiday faffing around in your accomodation instead of actually experiencing the real cultures on holiday then dont go here. its great for a base whilst lazing around on the beach all day. its very family orientated but we met lots of young couples there too. the pool was a bit dirty but the breeze out there caused that. The beach straight down right out the apartments is rocky and manky but if you walk past the hotel princess head straight down and to the beaches on the left they are beautiful. definately go out on a boat trip to see the whales there great!!
best restaurant is picasso dont go to the chinese buffet restaurants the food is sat there for hours and the staff have hygiene problems. apart from that everything great. personally wouldnt go back to optimist as i feel i could get more for my money nxt time. but if your doing a late deal its perfect. have great holidays guys and check out my report on the el vita apartments in rhodes they are amazing"!!!! going back to rhodes in 8 wks. watch this space for another great report!!!!xxxx

Early Evening - March 2003

Stayed here March 03 - I agree it's all very basic but a holiday is only as good as you make it. Far enough away from the trouble spots of Playa De Las Americas to be untroubled by rampaging youths. The hotel opposite was quite happy to allow us in to enjoy their entertainment, failing which the 'Hereford Bull' or The 'Brewers Droop' are just 5 minutes walk away.

A pleasant stroll to Los Cristianos is well worth the effort, and will build up the appetite for an evening meal.

Don't pay too much and don't expect the Ritz bear this in mind and you won't be too upset.
