I booked through Amex Centurion travel, on a Mandarin Oriental promotion, 2 nights for price of one.

This may sound like a real bargain, but the eligible rates were significantly more than usual rates available through agencies, and worked out pretty much the same as staying at the Peninsula or Sukhothai hotels, which i normally use in preference.

A ruthlessly efficient airport rep met me and escorted me to the hotel car. With Thai airways first class meet and greet service at the gate I was in the car on the way to the hotel within 15 minutes of stepping off the aircraft!

Check in was in room, a deluxe balcony room right on the river with great view. Some complimentary juice/tea etc appeared quickl. Room was traditional but very up to date where it counted (except the TV).

I had a massage at the spa (90 mins jet lag) which was one of the best (hotel) massages i'd had, albeit at around £75 - 5 times the price of going outside for a massage.

Food was first class, service was spot aon and very professional. The pool staff seemed top go out of their way to be helpful, and the lift boy still remembered my name, despite my not having stayed here for over 6 years.

Their limop service is very professional, more so than Peninsula and Sukhothai, the drivers know BKK backwards and cost no more than £30 / hour.

At times the place felt a bit stuffy. Almost to the point where appearances were more important than the guests. But that's a common trait I've found at other MO properties (esp the awful one in SF).

Check out was a humourless affair. The second night "free" included b/fast according to the Amex literature, but the hotel refused to recognise this. It wasn't worth getting involved in a big discussion over £20 or so, but they didn't handle it very well. I'd probably spent over twenty times that in extras in two nights, but they were prepared to quibble over it.

Overall, I'd probably stay again, I prefer the staff attitude to service at the Peninsula, and the atmosphere at sukhothai better.
