Pestana Carlton Madeira: Carlton Madeira in Funchal by Andy Fisher |
| Posted 17 March 2005 about a visit in January 2005 | Overall rating: 8.5 |
Spent almost a fortnight there in Feb / Mar 2005. The hotel is very good, the room I had overlooked the pool and had a good sea view, the service is also very good as the staff are quite attentive and the food is quite good (although I could find no trace of the free champagne with breakfast that was mentioned in another review). There's a choice of places to eat in the hotel but you have to check the "daily orders" to see which one is open when. There's a "pub", a cocktail bar with nightly entertainment and a pool bar. I believe there's also a bar down at sea level but due to the poor weather I didn't find it.
As mentioned the weather was not great, had a couple of good old fashioned Atlantic storms whilst I was there; all the regulars assured me that this was the worst weather they'd known for years. There were a few days of sunshine and out of the breeze / wind it was pleasant enough and far better than the UK at that time of the year.
I did notice that there was a lot of time-share selling going on; luckily I was travelling alone so didn't get pestered but it seems that Pestana are really pushing the time-share side of the hotel.
There are a few bars / restaurants / shops within easy walking distance of the hotel (the Indian restaurant just across the road was particularly good). The walk down to the harbour & Funchal town is fine but I must confess that it was a struggle to get back up the hill after a good lunch and a few drinks in town so I did use a taxi more than once and the few Euros it cost was well worth it.
For the techies there is internet access in the hotel, they provide computers and you pay for the pleasure. Luckily I had my laptop with me and found that in certain areas their wireless connection was open so I benefited from free access for the duration of my stay - perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned that in case they secure their wireless connection!!
This was my first time in Madeira and I found it to be a quiet and relaxing place - certainly not the most lively but very good for a quiet break away from a UK winter.
