Pez Espada: Hotel Pez Espada by Steve Pennington |

My wife and I booked a Thomson Med Playa deal to the Costa del Sol late last year and were told that the hotel would be allocated on arrival. Not as worrying as it seems because we knew that the options were the Hotel Pez Espada in Torremolinos or the Hotel Riviera in Belamadena. The rest is now history because we landed in Malaga on 6th March and booked into the Pez Espada just in time to enjoy dinner that evening. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. I believe the Hotel was built some 40 plus years ago (1959) and obviously has undergone extensive refurbishment. The location is superb, it's right on the sea front in La Carihuela some 10 minutes gentle stroll from the beautiful Belamadena Marina. The buffet style meals are excellent and my wife must have eaten more than her fair share of chocolate ice cream. We enjoyed a bottle of house red or white wine with each meal and it was very cheap at 6.60 euros a bottle (about £4) Visit and Enjoy!

Pez Espada: Pez Espada by Harry Falconer |

I work in a school and so can only take holidays when the prices are at their highest, so this time I left booking until the last minute to see if we could get a bargain - we did. We travelled in August 2002.
It was the first time we'd tried this and it did seem a bit strange turning up at the airport with no tickets. No problems though - at the Thomson desk they had hundreds of tickets waiting to be collected by last-minute travellers. If you go last-minute do make sure that transfers to the hotel and meals on the plane are included and try to use a debit card instead of a credit card - we were charged 5% for using a Visa card.
We got to Torremolinos and were allocated a hotel when we arrived. Been there a few times before but had never heard of the Pez Espada although it was a 4 star and not the 3 star we expected.
The hotel was a pleasant surprise and definitely worth it's 4 stars. The air-conditioning throughout the hotel was excellent - just like being in Florida.
The hotel is situated right on the promenade about 10 minutes stroll from Benalmadena marina. The rooms were well designed and very clean, the restaurant was nice and the food good with something for every taste (you won't get into dinner with shorts on).
There are two bars. The main bar is waiter service and although the waiters are OK the bar staff are amongst the slowest I've ever seen - plan well ahead if you want another drink! Prices at the bar are also fairly steep and never seemed to be the same for similar rounds. For the price of a brandy at the bar I bought a whole bottle at the local supermarket. There is a happy hour 3 times a week. The evening entertainment was very good but there was never much of an audience and it lacked any atmosphere.
The bar has a lovely roof terrace which is about 3 metres from the promenade and looks out over the sea - perfect to spend a pleasant evening.
An alternative for drinks and entertainment is the nearby Barracuda hotel which has a very pleasant bar, an excellent bar staff, cheaper drinks and a happy hour every evening - work your way through the many cocktails that they serve! The Barracuda does however get much more crowded at night and there are many more children - almost none at the Pez Espada. We also paid a quick visit to the now infamous Beach Club Hotel (we've been there for the last two New Years) to see what was happening - there didn't seem to be any problems there and we had a pleasant drink in the bar. You are really spoilt for choice if you want food or drink - there are restaurants everywhere but we found the beachside restaurants (chiringuitos) were the best and cheapest and packed on a Sunday.
The Thomson rep, Jacqui, was very helpful and seemed to know everything about the area. Do think before booking excursions or renting a car through the rep. It can be done much cheaper elsewhere - if you go out of the front door turn left and walk about 200 yards you can hire a car or book an excursion for up to half the price.
There is a hairdressers and a shop in the hotel but if you want to buy anything (water, food, booze) then there is a large supermarket about a hundred yards away. Out of the front door and up the street directly opposite, across the main road and the supermarket is on your right. They sell everything you'd get in a supermarket here. Buses also run in both directions from this main road.
There are two outdoor pools and a small indoor pool as well as a Jacuzzi and sauna. There are lots of sunbeds but the do charge ?1.5 for this you get a mattress and a towel. The area around the main pool was always fairly crowded but there is a grass round the back (actually near the front entrance) which is by the smaller pool and this was rarely crowded and had the added bonus of having a little kiosk just over the fence from which you could get water, cans of drink, ice-creams etc.
The marina at Benalmadena is worth a visit and from there you can get a boat to either Malaga or Fuenguirola (both about £5 return). We did both and had two excellent days out - much better than going by bus or train. Malaga really is a beautiful city and well worth at least one day to explore and shop.
All in all an excellent holiday. Visited places we'd never been to before and met some very nice people. The hotel couldn't really be faulted - the position was excellent, the accommodation good, the staff excellent and of course there were no kids running about! I would definitely go back.
