Playa la Arena: A superb hotel 5* by Robert Lewis 1 |
| Posted 07 November 2006 about a visit in October 2006 | Overall rating: 8.9 |
The room we were alocated had a sea view which overlooked the swimming pool area which was superb, rooms other side of hotel over looked a road, although not busy could probably be noisy at times, but ask for a high floor ( 3 or above ) due to the fact the lower floors are level with pool area. The room was spacious with a balcony, excellent air conitioning, and very clean and decorated to a high standard, with TV ( No BBC ) and limited channels except for Sky News, BBC World etc., that were watchable for a UK person.
The bathroom area was a substantial size with a separate shower which was ideal for cooling down with the temperature outside around a hot 25 degrees for the whole week. Cleaning of rooms was daily and to a very high standard, with sheets and towels changed on a daily basis, requested or NOT.
All staff were friendly, with everyone only only to willing to help, no matter how small the request with a first class service.
Although a large hotel, there was never a problem with finding a table, due to the fact you were shown by a waiter to the nearest available for either breakfast or dinner ( long trousers must be worn at dinner ). The restaurant area was very impressive, with excellent service and a comprehensive wine list if required.
Meal times were at reasonable times also, 07.30 am to 10.30 am and 07.00pm to 10.00pm so no need to rush and also very relaxed. Our only dissappointment, but please be aware in no way did it spoil our meal times or enjoyment of the food, we both felt the choice of food available although plentiful was perhaps not to both our tastes, ( but maybe to others ) and was a little on the cold side when returning to our table, but I must stress this is only a very, very minor negative with regards the dining situation.
Facilities were first class, with far to many to mention, for best information visit the hotels web site, but briefly :- Two swimming pools, piano bar, music hall ( although entertainment very limited ) 24 hour reception, room service, tennis, mini golf etc.
Playa la Arena, is a small and very quiet resort ideal for families or couples but not for the younger people looking for a livelier holiday. Although the area has a few bars, both British and German offering an extensive range of drinks at very reasonable prices, look for the best deals!!
Playa la Arena has a safe sandy(black) blue flag standard beach which is very popular with families, although not overcrowded in sunny November. There are at least five or six well stocked supermarkets within a 200 metre distance for those that are on a self catering basis or to purchase the essential drinking water.
Local buses are cheap with a trip to Los Christianos costing around 10 euros return, but be aware the journey although short in distance can take perhaps around one and a half hours due to traffic and amount of stops, so sit back and relax.
Our favourite part of the holiday was the short walk into the beautiful resort of Los Gigantos, which was enjoyable along the scenic coastal walk, but be aware in parts you encountered some short steep hills. This took around 45 minutes at a very steady pace, but again a good bus service was available for the not so fit for about 5 euros return.
My wife and I have started taking holidays on a regular basis over the last 3 years or so, but the Playa la Arena is by far the best hotel we have stayed in to date, and the resort itself is one of the nicest which suited our needs.
