Playamar: Playa mar. Hotel Hell by Lee Mac |
| Posted 14 August 2008 about a visit in August 2008 | Overall rating: 3.7 |
You must understand that staying at this hotel you play a big gamble. The reviews that are reasonable about this hotel are from people who were very lucky with there room allocation, or travelled out of the busier season!!! You guy’s can consider yourselves VERY LUCKY.
We booked our holiday over the phone as our internet service was unfortunately down. On being able to log back on we were horrified to read some very damning reviews over many years regarding the mentioned hotel. But rather than cancel the holiday we decided that we would form our own opinions. BAD MISTAKE.
The accommodation we were sold by our operative was an apartment room with a pool view on half board basis.
We arrived at the Hotel at approximately 1.30am to which just a night porter was present. We got our key to room 8 and was given some very poor directions to the room. When entering the part of the hotel where the room was my wife and I could not believe our eye’s. There were huge ghastly stains on the carpet all over the place, the plaster was coming of the walls with damp, and a door was inscribed aptly with the words “Hotel F**K”.
When we eventually found our room and entered our hearts sunk even further. We were given a room and not an apartment, it was tiny and very old fashioned with lamp shades missing and no way near on par with the pictures the hotel use to sell the property. The smell of mould and damp was foul and the view was over a building site at the back of the property. On closer inspection I opened the so called wardrobe and the shelf was covered in water, constantly replenished by a drip through the ceiling. This was clearly not a new problem as you could see deep set damp and rot in the plaster, the safe was covered in rust and all edging on the sodden chipboard shelves had long since disappeared. There was a trail of water across the floor to the skirting which had rotted and travelled into the wall. I inspected the bathroom and discovered a constant drip directly over the toilet which rendered it’s use impossible. Thus we had to use the public toilets in the reception area. I dread to think of the source of this water!
I immediately returned to reception and explained the room was unacceptable. The porter grinned as if he new exactly what I was talking about and had heard it all before, but in broken English from him and Spanish from myself I realised there was nothing he could do and we would have to suffer this until the morning.
Promptly at 8 o/c the following morning we explained our situation to the receptionist, she was reasonably polite but to our astonishment told us we would have to discuss this with the boss (owner Cati Ballester )
Who would not be in until 10am. We eventually got to speak to Mrs Ballaster to whom we addressed with the utmost politeness despite our stressful start to the holiday. She was very sharp with us from the off and eventually put her hand up at my face, gesturing me to shut up, despite the fact I was talking calm with no raised voice or aggression! She looked over our accommodation voucher which clearly states we booked an apartment with a pool view. She told us this was not so and we were entitled to a room only with the pool view being a wish as she put it. She made no apology for room 8 and offered us a room in the same block looking out over the same sight, to which we declined for fear of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire!. She then said if you want a pool view in a different block we would have to wait until after 3pm the following afternoon but could not guarantee anything. For sake of the long term implications and our health we decided to reluctantly wait for the room in the main hotel block and give up on the apartment we had booked. She reluctantly said she would send a maintenance guy to deal with the leak. When he eventually turned up that evening with an assistant they shut themselves in the bathroom where the access point was, tried to sound efficient and busy, then emerged saying the problem was at the room above and he was going up to deal with it right away. Several minutes later I went to the reception to acquire some change for the phone, and found the maintenance guy’s in the bar taking refreshments. The leak was never dealt with.
We had to keep our packed cases on the bed due to the wet floor and our valuables with us at all times as obviously you couldn’t put money and passport’s in a soaking wet safe. Incidentally the same day we vacated this room somebody else was put straight in, Think this say’s it all!.
It was clear that this treatment was common practice as there was always somebody asking to be moved to another room. After our second night in room 8 we took our chances after breakfast and asked the reception guy what time we could move into the new room, he looked surprised and said now of course . It then became apparent that Mrs Ballester was just being spiteful with us. When the receptionist opened the book with all the room details he questioned why we was returning the key for room 8. I inspected the book with him and it was clear that we were originally meant to be placed in room 145 in the better part of the hotel then the booking had been switched to room 8 at some point by the staff. We eventually got into room 345 which was just like the hotel use to sell there hotel. Basic but clean and comfortable, exactly the standard we expected. It is blatantly clear that the hotel overlaps bookings and use the run down wing as some kind of holding pen, if you don’t complain you stay there. ( I have since spoken to a good friend who worked in Majorca for a major tour operator for many years. And he confirms this is indeed common practice in the more run down hotel’s as way of gaining more revenue and filling in-adequate accommodation ) I returned to the reception to purchase a safe key and on discussion with the receptionist he admitted that room 8 was very bad amongst others in that part of the hotel, and exchanging rooms was a daily headache for him.
On our last day we decided to pay to stay in a room as our transfer was late in the day. Once again the standard was horrific with exposed live wires damp and crumbling concrete on the balcony. It is easily possible that guests will end up in these rooms time and time again, and with such hazards I hate to think what could happen with a small child present. I enclose pictures to show further the standards at this hotel.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BOOKED, IT WOULD BE WORTH EVERY PENNY TO SUFFER A CANCELLATION FEE!!!!!!

Playamar: Heaven has its hell holes by Christophe Thiry |
| Posted 07 August 2006 about a visit in July 2006 | Overall rating: 2.1 |
First let me tell you that we booked this dumpster through "Alltours" who advertise this "hotel" as one with a good reputation and a nice family atmosphere to it. Well, don't let yourself fooled by this as it is completely wrong!! I just saw a documentary saying Playamar is the worst hotel of Mallorca! This place is totally unhealthy, bleak and dirty. The front staff people don't give the slightest care about it! We had brownish liquids trickling down our bathtub and to be honest I couldn't take a shower in it for fear of getting hurt or getting infected by some sort of fungus! The walls were fly-blown which can be a good thing for an entomologist but I am not! My fiancé kept on saying this was a museum for dead mosquitoes (or maybe it was incrusted in the white paint as part of a dubious decoration...)! My bed sheets also had yellow stains (no, this was not lemon juice). The cleaning lady was also more a myth than reality as the fresh towels any decent hotel could provide: we found old and tired towels on the ground on our arrival!
The food was of the same kind and it probably consisted of leftovers from other hotels (the color of the food was also "interesting"). Ants we saw in the lunch area seemed to like it anyway! Speaking of ants, a family we met told us their room was infected with several kinds of insects and one of the girls had scabs on her chest because ants went over her during her sleep! Two members of this family also had asthma attack.
When the "alltours" (without the capital “a”, they don’t deserve it) agent came to the hotel the next after a sleepless night, many people queued up not to book excursions but to ask to be placed somewhere else! I didn't spend more than one night in this s..... hole because that was far more than my own sanity could bare. We ask to be placed somewhere else which we did but... we had to pay 500 extra euros (we had already paid 950 euros for the whole vacation package) to get somewhere decent. The “alltours” magazine only stated a difference of 200 euros for a similar package tour in the other hotel we went in! This is a shame to scam people like this and we intend to get some of our stolen money back! The agent also said his company knew Playamar was not a decent hotel. My question is: why do they still work with this hotel if not to make money out of people?
Some could not afford spending more money to be moved and they decided to shorten their holidays and get back home but the thing is that they had to pay extra money to "alltours" to get back! This is absolutely shameful (if not criminal) to send people who have saved money during the year to such kind of place.
We saw people crying in this filthy place, and many seem to be disgusted to be there. Of course this is not a 5 star hotel but this is not the reason to treat people this way. Needless to say that I strongly encourage people not to go there and avoid it at all cost. This place is dangerous and dirty!
