Porto Santa Maria: One of the best by abc |

This hotel rates as one of my favourites. I have stayed in many hotels ever the years and this one does all the important things very well. As soon as you enter the hotel you know you have made the right choice. From the outside it can look very ordinary but it blends well with the low-rise buildings around it. If you look for a hotel which provides a very high standard of food, cleanliness, facilities and service this is the one for you and it manages all this without feeling too formal or stuffy. I have stayed in five star hotels which are not on a par with this one. Where this hotel really scores is its situation in the Zona Velha. Once outside the hotel gates you are right in the heart of the old town with all its bars and restaurants in the charming narrow streets. One other aspect which I really liked was although the hotel is in the old town it is very quiet with no passing traffic or noisy bars. The heart of Funchal is within easy walking distance (flower market 10 minutes ) on the level, a consideration if you are less active.
I use this web site and a few others to research holidays/hotels and of all the reviews on the Porto Santa Maria I haven't read a negative comment and that I can assure you is the highest recommendation indeed.

Porto Santa Maria: Porto Santa Maria & Funchal by Alan |

Stayed for a week over New Year. This hotel undoubtedly has the best location in Funchal - right on the seafront and in the old town, which has a terrific selection of restaurants.
Hotel itself was excellent, with comfortable, well-decorated rooms and public areas. Staff were outstandingly helpful and friendly.
We were in a foursome and chose to eat out every night except New Years Eve, whose Gala Dinner was included. This was a disappointment, being a fairly ordinary buffet and all over by 9.30pm. ( we were comparing with fabulous Gala Dinners in Tenerife the last two years) We then went out into the old town, where the atmosphere was fantastic, returning to the vantage point of the hotel roof for the best firework display we have ever seen, accompanied by complimentary champagne. Funchal is a regular stop for cruise ships, but the reputation of its firework display is such that they work their itineraries around it and seven big ships were in port, all lit up, including the Oriana. Such a gathering you are unlikely to see anywhere else.
We had most lunches on the terrace at the hotel and were very satisfied with those. The breakfasts could not be faulted.
Out & about, we particularly enjoyed the cable car up to Monte and the brilliant sledge ride back down!
The weather was not brilliant for us, with a cool, strong wind much of the time, but it didn't rain and we got a couple of afternoons on the sunbeds.
We would definitely go back to Madeira and to the same hotel.

Porto Santa Maria: great hotel by Chelsea Barry |

stayed there for the second time this year and the hotel is great.Situated at the end of sea front by the old town and very close to all the shops.
It has all the facilities you require for a great holiday, great rooms lovely pool and bar area and spotless.
The hotel has another benefit in the fact that you do not have to walk down from the hills into town as you do with most of the other hotels.
All the good restaurants are situated locally and the marina is 10mins walk away.
In the marina you can get the dolphin watch boats or go out big game fishing.
Also you can get the ferry from there which is well worth a day out.
