Prague Review: A very nice place, and so cheap

Written by Mike Ward 4 on 07 Apr 2004 about a trip in Jul 2004.

Prague is a city of contrasts. It is an old city with beautiful architecture, especially around the river and old town centre. It is also a very up-beat city with lots of clubs, bars and adult entertainment - a bit Amsterdamish but without the drug issue. For a visitor from the UK everything is amazingly cheap. A good quality 3 course meal with wine and aperitif should cost no more than £12 ($18 US), and my central, quite swish hotel cost £40 ($60 US) a night - which was a total bargain.

I’d advise anyone staying here to get a hotel in the centre of the city around Wenceslas Square as transportation is a bit of a chore; although the metro is fine, buses and trams can be inconvenient and taxies can rip you off if you don’t pre book them. Anyway the price of hotels is so cheap that staying in the centre is the obvious choice. (See my review of the Ambassador hotel).

The people are very friendly and you feel very safe walking around, even in the early hours.

Dance clubs are plentiful and good value for money, but not much different than clubs in the UK - why go to Prague to dance in a club when there is so much more to do! However if you do go clubbing I’d recommend the Terrace Bar near Charles Bridge. It has about 3 bars and you can chill off on the river terrace between dances. There is a 4 story club right next to it which I found a bit grim - but each floor had different music styles which was nice.

I went on a stag weekend so I visited a couple of adult entertainment venues which I must say were very professionally run. There were no exorbitant drinks prices and entry fees were reasonable around £4 ($6US). I would highly recommend the Go-Go bar Cascade - you can’t miss the hawkers in orange shirts in the city centre offering you free drink entry. It was a very laid back strip joint with no hassle or pressure to buy drinks for girls, but very clean and friendly - not at all seedy and very well run.

Restaurants are plentiful and even the expensive looking ones are cheap. The food is generally a heavy fare of goulash type dishes with dumplings and potatoes - but very tasty. The U Zavoje restaurant was one of my favourites. Located in the city centre at one end of the row of market stalls on Havelska, it looks like a wine bar but serves great meals and will also organise wine tasting party if you so wish.

The only downside of Prague from a safety point of view is the pickpockets. This is rife here and principally carried out by Romanian looking girls who ‘bump’ into you in the street and ‘fondle’ you with one hand while picking your pocket with the other. If you are approached like this, just don’t get close - they are very good at what they do.

Ambassador-Zlata Husa review
Very nice hotel at a bargain price
This hotel was excellent and much much better than expected for the price. It is right in the centre of Prague where all the action and the shops are. The hotel itself is quite grand, large and airy...
