Prague shopping

Like any city that is popular with tourists there are going to be areas where prices are high - Prague is no exception. However, the city is expansive and visits to areas away from the main tourist sites will reward the inquisitive shopper with great bargains. Get a bus or tram map and get around. Most hotels have staff who are all too willing to impart wise shopping tips and places with keen prices.

Prague nightlife

I first visited Prague just after the Velvet Revolution, things have changed so much since that time. The Prague City Authorities make the visitor very aware that there are pickpockets around. They are as embarrassed about this problem as a visitor is in encountering it. Being simply responsible about where you keep you money and valuables is probably as valid in popular areas of Prague as I ever have encoutered in New York. One rule, don't leave temptation open and you are unlikely to become a victim. Night life is what you make it, check out the guide books and do what suits you that is on offer. Sure, there are the inevitable British Stag Parties there getting themselves well and truly oiled - in all my time I have never suffered abuse or problems from them.

Prague restaurants

Eating in Prague is a true delight if you stick to dishes that are not the Czech traditional food, in truth, it is an acquired taste. I suspect most people would find the Turnip Dumplings a challenge. Farmer's Platter can be a sharp culture shock. However, the Mushrooms, the Cherry Dumplings and other real Czech dishes should be tested - I was shamed that I could only eat 6 Cherry Dumplings. The restaurants are great, they are cheap and clean. Some waiters think that they are from New York and behave in a manner to suggest that they could well be from the notoriusly bad service joints. There are many places to eat and almost always they have menus outside to view. Largely I think it can be said that the menus are truthful and imaginative. Explore Zizkov, there are lots of cool places to eat there.

Prague attractions

It is not time for me to give you the rundown on places to visit. But it is a poor visit to this beautiful city not to look around the sites open. Get a guide book, so many to choose from, so much to see. Don't try to visit the Jewish Old New Synagogue on Fridays or known Jewish Festivals - a polite refusal of entry will be conveyed by a most likeable security guard. One little treat I enjoy is a trip around the City and across the River by vintage car. It's not too expensive, lasts a respectable length of time and the guides are great.

So this is about Prague, but why not stray on the railway to towns outside in the country - this is a remarkable country with wall to wall world heritage just there for the viewing. The people are great and they are welcoming. I have yet to find a town that doesn't have restaurants with multi-lingual menus. If in doubt with anything on the menu, always opt for the chicken!

Prague events

Events are numerous throughout the year. Everything from fools swimming in the Vltava river in the depths of winter to beautiful re-inactments of events from History. People take up at least one of the many concerts on offer around the city. Do check out what is being offered, not all of the concerts are so good, a little look behind the hype can be rewarding. I guess that everyone likes to see the Castle guard change and the Clock on the hour in the Old town square - the latter can be a slight disappointment if you are expecting too much.

Prague day trips

There are many day trips on offer, variations flow from trips on the river, coach tours [a tad costly for my taste] or a rewarding visit to Cedok [Czech national tourist offices] to get a sound set of suggestions and cost saving ways to achieve them. Do some homework before you go, you will not be disappointed. One trip that comes to mind is a visit to the western area of Cheb. Maybe my choice town is called Frantiscovy Lasne - Frankensbad [German name] or Frank's Spa [British Translation]. Frank is a bronze statue holding a fish, tradition has it that you rub his nose to get good luck or rub another part of his anatomy to achieve conception - I went for the good luck! The town has Mozart's House and even dear old Bethoven's place, Alfonse Mucha lived there as does a most remarkable look alike of Renee' [Allo allo] in a local bar.
