We chose the Prinsotel la Dorada for our family (2 adults + 2 kids aged 4 and 7) holiday for summer 2007. I do a lot of business travel and so am very fussy when it comes to our family holiday - I want quality and high standards of service for the best price and I think that we dropped lucky with this hotel/apartment complex.
We arrived just after midnight and the hotel entrance and reception area is visually impressive with its fountains, water features and marble floors. More importantly the receptionist was extremely welcoming and helpful - obviously proud of the hotel - and that speaks volumes - the rest of the hotel staff had a similar attitude. When you travel with a young family it becomes a bit of a military operation and you learn to really appreciate the little things that people do.
We stayed in a one bed apartment - twin bedroom, living room with twin sofa bed (fine for the kids aged 4 and 7 but would not suite 2 adults) and TV, small kitchenette (hob, fridge, sink), and bathroom with bath and shower. The apartment was clean and well-kept and big enough for the 4 of us. The only criticism would be that the balcony is a bit on the small side.
The pool area is a visually impressive lagoon style, kid friendly, and well kept as are the rest of the hotel grounds.
There is a kids club which provides day time games, face painting etc as well as a kids disco for an hour in the evening.
We stayed self catering and so can't really comment on the dining facilities.
The hotel is located in a quiet part of playa de muro which we found attractive - supermarkets, pubs, restauraunts are all within walking distance or you can go into Alcudia for more nightlife if thats your thing - short bus ride/taxi. We had a hire car and visited the old town ports in Alcudia and Polenca which were really nice places and had a greater choice of places to eat etc.
Across the main road, literally 2 minute walk, is the beach which is excellent - its clean, has lifeguards on duty, and is shallow for quite a distance out and so good for the children.
Now for the good bit - The high street travel agent price for our one week stay at this hotel was £1500 for accomodation, flights and transfer. We booked the hotel through diy travel and the flights through Monarch and this came out £550 cheaper!!. We hired a car for the week for £120 and were still on a massive saving. Next year we plan to have a two week holiday, try somewhere new for the first week and return to the prinsotel la dorada for the second. If your looking for a good place for a family holiday but something a bit quieter and not Butlins abroad then this is a good choice.
