Puerto Azul: Great value accommodation, well maintained by Karen Forshaw 1 |
| Posted 22 September 2005 about a visit in May 2002 | Overall rating: 6.0 |
I stayed in the Puerto Azul in 2002 for 2 weeks HB.
As a single traveller at the time, I looked for anywhere in the travel agents that had none or no single occupancy charge, and this was possibly the best out of what I was offered, all be it an Allocate on Arrival.
The design of the complex is quite unusual I feel, and the best way to describe it is imagine rock with a hotel on the top that keeps growing downwards...ie it drapes down the sides, well that there is Puerto Azul.
Having been to Playa del Ingles the year before on an AOA holiday and enjoyed it, I really wanted to go there and was a little disappointed when I heard it was Puerto Rico, however the resort is bustling and has ample shops and bars to occupy.
There are if memory serves 600+ steps down to the beach and the flat part of Puerto Rico where all the shops and bars are.
It is quite a nice walk (honestly!) with beautiful views over the bay on the way.
I never even attempted walking back, taxis were only about £2 at the time so hell that got chosen first!.
I also found on the second to last day if you carry on up the hill (steep) and a few steps- about 200yds, is another shopping centre called the Europa.
Again, shops, bars restaurants etc - I didn't fancy the walk up but curiosity got the better of me one day and it was quite nice up there.
Back to the hotel - the entrance hall is absolutely fabulous, probably the best ive ever stayed in. Lots of full size palm trees and exotic plants, and plenty of marble.
There are lots of lifts in the complex and I had to take 3 to get to my accomodation. because of its situation, a lift can only drop so far before touching rock again, so out you get into another lift..etc etc
The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated compared to other hotels I have stayed in.
A small kitchen area is also provided as the compleax also taked self catering or it did then anyway.
I also had a huge balcony (15' x 8') or so which had absolutey spectacular views over Puerto Rico and the sea.
Food in the hotel was basic and actually had a first for me on the menu.
I have stayed in many hotels throughout my childhood, yet i can never remember sprouts being served at virtually every meal.
Don't get me wrong - I like sprouts but not every night!
Food was generally lukewarm and very bland - the salads tasted like they had been washed in tap water and was very offputting - in fact I only tried it twice.
There is also a childrens club with all day entertainers for them which looked good for them., and parents.
There was also the standard 'excellent' (through gritted teeth) evening entertainment laid on.
All in all I did enjoy my holiday, and have since gone back to GC for more holidays, and am again in 2006.
I would recommend the hotel to anyone who is mobile - it really is no good for anyone not unless you hire a car/ taxi everywhere.

i visited the puerto azul in october 2004 with my family, we were there for one week only, it was a very pleasant holiday, the pool was fab, there are three pools one of which is a kids pool, the food from the snack bar was lovely and the staff were so polite and accomodating and brilliant with the children. the reception area was cool and relaxing, would recomend the puerto azul and we will be going there again. the apartments are well equiped with kettle, microwave, fridge, two ring hob, fans, etc.

Puerto Azul: GOOD HOLIDAY by John Lillystone |
| Posted 01 August 2004 about a visit in April 2004 | Overall rating: 6.7 |
Had a good time at the hotel, staff were pleasant and helpful. The rooms though could do with refurbishment. found the bar prices expensive and the drink below par but the food was excellant, the entertainment was also very good especially for the young ones. One thing that we were worried about though was the security after reading some reviews on other websites re people getting their safes broken into. the balcony door and bedroom window were locked via a bolt system, everytime the rooms were cleaned, we found that these were left unlocked so please check your's if you go there. The window and door that did not open were secured with a screw which anyone could open if they had a screwdriver. A few apartments in the 1000 block (adjacent to the stairs down to the beach were broken into during our 2 week stay). The keycard for the door operates the electrics in the apartments, but if you fold a playing card in half this will suffice and you can leave your lights on when you go out.
Would reccommend a visit to amadores beach, nice sand and restaurants/bars - try the Irish cottage for sunday lunch it is excellant. Beware of timeshare touts, they are persistant buggars and can get on your nerves. we are going back in december but to different apartments

Puerto Azul: Fantastic Time by Julie Webster 1 |

We stayed at the Puerto Azul for a week self catering in mid April 2004. I was pleasantly surprised with our accommodation. Eveything about the aparthotel was clean, from the reception, pools, poolside bar, and of course the apartment, which was fully equiped with a microwave, kettle, toaster, tv (but who wants to watch tv on holiday?) and a fan.
All staff at the Peurto Azul were friendly and polite. The cleaners came 5 days out of 7, and if you had some dishes lying, would clean them and put them away!!
The food and drink prices at the poolside bar I thought were very reasonable, there was also entertainment every night, so if you didn't want to go to either of the centres, it was very easy to stay at the bar.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Puerto Rico, the weather was brilliant and the apartments were great. I will not hesitate to come back again (hopefully this October!)

Puerto Azul: Fine for a winter week by Teresa Jacobs 1 |
| Posted 29 March 2004 | |
Stayed at the Puerto Azul for 7 nights arriving the day after Boxing Day 2003. Our first experience of self catering and I was really surprised how well equipped the apartment was (not that I did any cooking - I don't cook on holiday). The apartment was very clean and tidy, but some of the paintwork and furniture did need a bit of attention. The grounds were fairly well looked after and the pools were great. The facilities in the main hotel building were very good, particularly the quieter bar.
The walk down to the main resort of Puerto Rico and back is nowhere near as bad as we had been led to believe and we tried it both ways - following the road down and also taking the "short cut" via several hundred steps to the side of the hotel. Obviously it might be a problem for those with walking difficulties or very young children but there always seemed to be plenty of taxis outside the hotel.
We liked the hotel and resort for a short winter break but would certainly not want to stay there for two weeks, particularly during the summer. The hotel grounds are not really large enough to accommodate too many children - there are no open spaces where they can run around or play with footballs so conquently those whose parents did not bother to supervise them annoyed other people.
Oh, and we only saw two cockroaches in our apartment during the week and one around the pool area!

Puerto Azul: Puerto Azul by Catherine Carter |

Just back from Puerto Azul. It was very hot! Good Entertainment, lovely clean hotel, rooms cleaned five times a week (not wed &sun) Staff friendly. Pool good - plenty of sun beds but not enough brollies. Had a super view from balcony over the marina & beach. Building work was some distance away-hardly heard it. Only two cockroaches near a lift. The steps were a challenge but keep you fit. At the top of the hill the Barbacoa restaurant was good for food and entertainment. Down on the beach the Restaurant Gran Canaria was really lovely, the food was superb. Will definitely go back. In the shopping centre upstairs the chinese Slow Boat is great value for money-only4.98 euros for as much as you can eat. Amadores Beach is super you can walk round from the beach or take a bus or taxi as they are really cheap. There are plenty of shops and take away food or eat in, but at the weekends go early as all the local people go out for the day and it gets really busy. Mogan harbour is a must, boat trips are great, and the harbour is really pretty-don't forget your camera!
