Puerto Plata Travel Guide: Riu hotels & day trips

Puerto Plata day trips

I did several trips in 2000. I went on a horse riding trek through the jungle. Was a spectacular day apart from me being scared of the horse for the first hour! The scenery was fantastic. Drinking rum from a fresh coconut and riding though the rivers on horseback is something you don't forget.

Went on the jeep safari. Bring some sweets and pens for the kids as they run behind the jeeps shouting 'chiclets'.

Did a day trip round Puerto Plata and visted the rum factory. Drinking rum at 9.30am isn't a great idea really but hey you're on holiday! Most of the places they take you to people just constantly try to sell you things and it's a bit irritating.

In 2003 I took a day trip to the south of the island. I flew down there and then taken by speedboat to a beach in a national park. There was alot of coral around and a fair few rocks in the water so be careful where you put your feet. it was a really long day and not cheap but was a great day.

Also swam with dolphins which was fantastic. I went to Seaworld (can't remember the actual name of the place) in a large pool but it was still absolutely amazing.

Puerto Plata History and Culture

I have visited the Dominican Republic twice. Stayed at the Riu Merengue in December 2000 & the Riu Mambo in December 2003.

The Riu hotels were both great. I found the staff at the Mambo a bit friendlier. The pool at the Merengue is always crowded. The Mambo is usually a little quieter. The Bachata pool is really nice but fairly busy.

All in all both holidays were great and I'd highly recommend the Riu hotels & Dominican Republic. It's a beautiful place and the people are friendly.
