| Puerto caters for all ages and nationalities. If you can make it there for the carnival you will have a great time. Carnival week falls in the same week as Shrove Tuesday/Ash Wednesday and runs from the Saturday before to the saturday after. There are different things going on all week and people of all ages dress up in fancy dress. They have a bandstand set up in the main square and dancing in the street till at least 3am. On the Wednesday evening there is the 'Internment of the Sardine' where the people parade through the town with a big silver fish on a plinth. When it arrives at the harbour there is a firework display. Most of the Puerto men dress up as women in mourning and they follow the fish through the streets prentending to cry and wail. It is some sight.
The carnival week finishes on the Saturday afternoon with a parade right through the town from the Martinez Beach area round to Plaza Charco. It takes about 2-3 hours for the whole parade to pass by. The atmosphere is electric.
Even at other times of the year there is plenty to do, Loro Parque is marvellous especially the Penquin Planetarium.
Also there is the Casino (take your passport with you if you go there) the botanical gardens, lots of bars, cafes, restuarants and shops. The only thing you may say is on the downside is as it is in the Atlantic the water, on occasions can be a bit rough.
I will be going again in August my 31st visit, have tried Mallorca and Cyprus in between but love Puerto so much.
