Qawra Review: Qawra - the underestimated resort

Written by Big Jude on 08 Sep 2005 about a trip in Apr 2005.

Once again Big Jude and travelling companion Lesley have returned from their third tour of duty to the Island of Malta, and the resort Qawra to be precise. We stayed at the Venus Aparthotel (formerly the Reuben Court) we cannot fault the place despite the negative responses from other holiday review sites and holidaymakers! Once again we visited mine host Peter at the Welcome or once again not so Welcome! especially if you are 14 stone or above, his welcome is to give you one of his old wooden chairs cause they are stronger than the new ones he has forked out his precious lira on, which are located on the new smoking zone on the pavement. This man is Fattist! yes ladies Fattist, we could not believe our eyes when he asked these two larger girls (who were from our hotel) to remove themselves of his new chairs and went and brought out two tatty splintered wooden artifacts from the back of the bar stating "that they would be stronger" Me and my mate wanted to kill him, but the two ladies went off most upset, I think that this was because they were appalled at what he had said more than the splinters they would have gained in their backsides.
Not only that but he is not willing to be corrected on his posters which explain the new smoking rules, which are ok as long as you dont point out all the spelling errors (which he will blame on some poor innocent Maltese person) as you are likely to be blasted and then sent severely to Coventry. Should this happen to you, simply take yourself off across the road to the other pub which is wonderful the landlord is friendly and likes to play up to date music which is fairly loud and you are made to feel special, also his nibbles are far superior, plenty of nuts etc better than the fried courgette on fried bread we were offered at the Welcome. YUK! When I did a review last year at least I could praise his chipolatas. However, for a truly nice quiet relaxing place to drink try the Two Cherries which is located up from the Welcome across the road and down the side street to your left, a beautifully clean bar with a nice barman and pretty traditional decor.
Most people do not like the resort of Qawra which is slightly unfair, as it is less crowded than Bugibba but if you want to go there it is a short stroll along the promenade, also Qawra is perfectly located for the Bus Station from where you can reach anywhere on the island.
I love this place, as two ladies travelling together we have never felt uncomfortable about walking around the place and find that the local people on the whole are friendly.
We may even be going on our 4th tour of duty this year once again, we will keep you posted.
