| Ramblas, Gothic Quarter Travel Guide: City to Beach--20 mins!
| | Written by Theresa Jackson 1 on 27 Feb 2006 about a trip in Jun 2005. Trip was for a couple on short break. Theresa Jackson 1 would definitely visit again.
| Ramblas, Gothic Quarter shopping | 10.0 | | The shopping is very good in the Gothic quarter, one of the nicest things is that there are lots of individual shops selling unique one off pieces of clothing, and in among there is no shortage of unusual gifts. The large department store in the heart of the city C........? is also a good place to explore as they stock not only recognisable labels but lots of other great items you won't spot at home. Just one thing to watch out for is the beggars who send in their small children to distract you with garbled spanish and rustling papers in order to rob you of anything they can pick up. The women roam around with weeks old babies in the blazing sun begging for money, but one thing is for sure the local people positively discourage them and will admonish them should they become a nuisance. |
Ramblas, Gothic Quarter nightlife | 10.0 | | There is salsa dancing, which can be very amusing but the handsome guys expect some reward for their invitation to dance with the unsuspecting tourists!! Still good fun though. Partying goes on into the early hours, but as you trudge back over the bridge you realise there is going to be a long wait for a taxi should you need one, so be prepared. |
Ramblas, Gothic Quarter restaurants | 9.0 | | Down at the Marina seems to be where its at in the evening, but as is common in Europe the place livens up later in the evening. The parties come from all over the world and it seems like a horseshoe of bars and restaurants come alive. Try and do some research with the local people for a recommendation of where to eat as this is obviously a tourist attraction and we found our choice disappointing. |
Ramblas, Gothic Quarter attractions | 10.0 | We took an open top bus tour to explore the tourist attractions the easy way and had earphones to listen to the commentary. Very interesting, but I would wait for an open top seat for the best view. You can get on and off although we didn't and the traffic can get a bit boring but you are in a big city so expect it. A lot of the sightseeing is of Gaudis' architecture, make of it what you will. However you do get the feeling of the place, your own location, the main shopping centre, the football stadium etc. Worth doing we would say.
One of the great things about Barcelona is the fact that from being in the heart of the city to finding yourself on the Beach is only a twenty minute walk. It seems incredible, yet so convenient. The beach is very good, with bars and restaurants on the walkway. A world away from the activities on the Ramblas. |
Ramblas, Gothic Quarter History and Culture | | My visit to Barcelona was far too short! We stayed at a Hotel which overlooked the Ramblas and it was fascinating to say the least. There is such a cosmopolitan atmosphere here it is almost tangible. The strolling crowds make for very interesting people watching not to mention the street vendors and the street artists mimicking theatre performances to shame Hollywoods best. Should you stand and enjoy them too long purchance to take a photograph, their theatre is set in motion and you will be required to donate a few coins. but it is well worth it. We were able to actually watch them setting up, dressing up, wrapping up and changing over, it was truly memorable. If you sit in one of the cafes on the Ramblas itself expect to pay slightly more for your refreshment, but decide for yourself if the passing entertainment is worth it. We ate in two restaurants on the Ramblas and found them passable but there is much more exciting fare as you explore the streets off the main run, as is usually the case.
A geared up city, worth more than one visit definitely. |
