Stayed here Nov 2002. Booked online so really had no idea what to expect. First impressions were not too good as the area was a little seedy (homeless people across the street and all night XXX cinemas). But the area was completely safe. We walked to and from the hotel at night and had no problems. The locals are used to tourists and tend to ignore you.
The hotel itself was fine. The room was clean and spacious, though the tv remote was attached to the bedside cabinet by a spiral cord. The view from our 7th floor window was great, especially for the veterans day parade . We met friendly staff and residents in the bar and you could get a decent continental breakfast in the lobby. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel but we didn't eat there. Others who did said it was great. There are plenty of facilities close by and an all night market across the road. And the best place was a small donut shop outside the front door where you could buy huge donuts and flavoured coffees and take them back to your room for breakfast!
The trolley stopped right outside the hotel and took you past Union Square right down to Fisherman's Wharf, so the location is great for public transport.
Don't be put off by first impressions. This is a great hotel close to everything, with everything close by, and without getting ripped off by the over-priced hotels a few blocks away in Union Square.
