River Palace: Great Roman break by Janette Matthews |
| Posted 15 August 2006 about a visit in August 2006 | Overall rating: 9.6 |
The River Palace Hotel is ideally situated to take full advantage of all the beautiful sights in Rome. A four star hotel, with the friendliness of staff that you would expect from a family run guest house. Everyone had a smile, and nothing was too much trouble.
We expected the rooms to be small, and although they were, we didn't feel hemmed in at all, and everything was in place that was needed. Very nice decor, extremely comfortable beds, TV, mini bar, and a beautiful compact bathroom, complete with robes and hair dryer.
The public areas in the hotel are elegant in design, clean and well cared for.
The breakfast was ample, with a choice of hot and cold foods in buffet style. Fill up to sustain all the walking you will be doing. Even though Rome is fairly compact, we managed to feel very tired at the end of the day.(actually....that may have something to do with our age!!)
The hotel is situated right next to the Piazza del Popolo, and a walk down the Via del Corso brings you to the Spanish steps, and lovely exclusive designer shops. The trevi fountain is close by , as is the Pantheon.
After an evening out the return to the hotel room finds that the beds have been turned down, slippers placed at the foot of the bed, chocolates and a weather forecast for the following day have been placed on the bed. All really nice touches, that made our stay wonderful.
Be aware that prices for drinks vary dramatically from bar to bar. We found quite often that by trying to avoid the obvious tourist spots, we didn't necessarily avoid high prices and vice versa. We paid as little as 5 euros for a small beer and cappucino, and as much as 12 euros, which is quite startling.
Over the river, on the way to the Vatican, look out for a shop called Castrano, which is just fantastic for chocolates, wine, pasta etc. And have the cheapest and best cappucino by standing at the bar, before you fill your basket with goodies.
Four nights in Rome is plenty long enough to see all you want to, and spend lots of money. Enjoy! We certainly did.
