Rotterdam shopping

Rotterdam is shopping city number one. Where else would you find such a diversity of shopping districts as here? From exclusive to popular, from megastore to small boutique, in an arcade or a bustling street; Rotterdam has it all.

The Witte de Withstraat is a magnet for the culturally aware shopper. Unusual galleries and cutting edge fashion are all here.

Along the Oude and Nieuwe Binnenweg, hip and traditional literally exist side by side. Nieuwe Binnenweg has numerous record shops with the newest sounds and fashion boutiques that sell the latest (vintage) trends.

Rotterdam nightlife

Clubbing city of the Netherlands: it is a title that Rotterdam has won for itself by the explosive growth of the number of cafés, restaurants, clubs and discotheques over the last twenty years. Rotterdam is the cradle of house and dance music, a fact that is clear from the very high quality of dance parties and clubs. Famous locations for parties include club Now & Wow (housed in an old grain silo), and the trendy in-crowd of dance effortlessly gravitates to clubs like Nighttown, B.U.M.B. and Off_Corso.

Rotterdam restaurants

Rotterdam is a city of many flavours. For the Dutch, French to the Chinese, Moroccan, Turkish, you name it, you can find it in Rotterdam. There are many reasonably prized restaurants but also offers luxurious dinner venues for an exclusive business lunch or meetings and incentives. From a simple pub, or a trendy place like the Westelijk Handelsterrein to one of the best restaurants of Holland: Parkheuvel (owner of three Michelin stars). A restaurant as ‘Blits’ stands apart by its exclusive setting; eating and drinking while enjoying a wonderful view at the river Maas.

Rotterdam attractions

More than four million people visit the attractions in Rotterdam every year. Where do they all go to? With top attractions such as Blijdorp Zoo, Spido and naturally the Euromast, there is always something for everyone to do, both young and old.

Cultural life is vibrant in Rotterdam. There is a broad selection of museums in Rotterdam. From modern art to historical treasures, from architecture to photography, from historical ships to exotic animals - just about anything you can imagine is displayed in a museum in the city.

Rotterdam events

Rotterdam is alive the whole year with festivals and events connected with culture, sports and music. The city has been awarded the title of Events City of the Year twice, and with good reason!

Rotterdam History and Culture

Rotterdam has a reputation as a working city. There is a saying that in Rotterdam the shirts are sold with the sleeves already rolled up. The joke that money is earned in Rotterdam, distributed in The Hague and spent in Amsterdam also says much about the city.

On 14 May 1940, during the Second World War, almost the entire inner city was destroyed during a bombing raid. Immediately after the end of the war, reconstruction began in earnest. Rotterdam owes its contemporary image to this rebuilding: a spacious feel, modern and courageous architecture. The many high-rise buildings give the city its characteristic skyline.

Rotterdam has not been idle since the post-war reconstruction either. Much has changed in the city in the last few decades. The port has gradually moved from the city centre to industrial districts such as Europoort and the Maasvlakte. The areas then becoming available have been given a new use as residential and recreational districts. The Kop van Zuid and the Lloydkwartier are good examples of this, with their spectacular skyscrapers and new uses for old port buildings.

Getting to Rotterdam

Rotterdam can be reached in many ways: by car, boat, train and plane. Flights from all major cities in the neighbouring countries continually arrive at Rotterdam Airport. The ferry from Harwich docks at Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland), from where travellers from the UK will arrive by train at Rotterdam Central Station within half an hour. The ferry from Hull docks at the Maasvlakte where a bus is waiting to bring passengers direct to Rotterdam.

Getting around Rotterdam

Within the city itself, the network of buses, trams and the metro provide excellent transport links.

When to visit Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a year round destination. Temperatures rise in the summer and lots of large summer festivals (July/ August) make the city even hotter.
