We stayed a the Royal York Hotel for a weekend in May 2005. The room was well equipped if a little small for the price, although there were 2 weddings at the hotel so they were fully booked and I imagine we had one of the smaller rooms. It was clean & the bathroom was sufficient. All of the staff we met were extremely friendly and helpful.
The location is ideal, as the hotel is next door to the Station & a few minutes walk from the city walls and main attractions. We were not disturbed at all by any noise from the trains but our room was on the other side of the hotel. Both the food and the service in the restaurant was very impressive. At breakfast there was a very good choice. There was some refurbishment work whilst we were staying, but the hotel had written to inform us of this once we had made the resrevation and other than the temporary relocation of the bar, this did not interfere with our break at all. The swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna offer a relaxing break from the city and the facilities on offer are maintained to a high standard.
The hotel is really pretty at night when it is lit up & the gardens are well maintained but a lot smaller that thy look in the photographs. The hotel is fairly expensive but we were told about all the additional costs when we booked, such as the £5 car parking fee. All in all I would recommend this hotel to those staying in York, but make sure you take your credit card with you.
