| Saint Marks, Saint Paul Review: Venice march 2004 | | Written by Lee-Ann Panrucker on 11 Mar 2005 about a trip in Feb 2004.
| We stayed in the Tritone which is not on the main island, so you'll need to be prepared to hop on the train and get used to the public transport. Little tip - not a great deal of english is spoken in the Tritone vicinity so it can be fun trying to learn that you have to validate your train ticket in the yellow machine before you travel!
I had heard that Venice was a bit smelly due to all the waterways, but I didn't find that at all. In fact, I enjoyed throwing the window open and breathing in the really fresh, clean, different smell of Italy.
The gondolas are a bit expensive, especially when you can see the city on the water buses - for about 10euros you can get a 'travel card' and see all the sites and go island hopping.
I think that two or three days in Venice is plenty of time, it would've been horrible to have gotten bored with looking at all the pretty buildings and canals etc.
If like us, you're travelling onto the island by train, turn left outside of the station as it's a much prettier walk to the Rialto Bridge. There are some lovely little restaurants and street cafe's as well as a little street market and some nice shops, for those like me who aren't overly impressed by just the Gucci, Versace, Prada etc near St Marks Square. We felt a bit cheated because we didn't find this route until late in our second day and we much prefered it.
Everyone told us we must visit St Marks square, which admittedly was very pretty... and kept us entertained for all of about 10mins!
What we could believe was the pigeon situation. Ken Livingstone'd have a fit - people buying food for flying rats. Mind you, the (annoying) American students loved covering themselves in the things and then screaching because (like) they (like totally) didn't like it (man). Takes the beauty away from the architechture really!
The food though was out of this world. Try the pizza anywhere and you'll find yourself wondering how the likes of Pizza Hut get away with selling theirs! And take some chewing gum cos there's garlic in everything!
Despite being obviously very busy, Venice truly is romantic & magical. For all the people there, I can't say I noticed another soul, save my boyfriend. (Anyone ready for the sick bucket?) |
