| Salou Review: Port Aventure/Universal theme park fun! | | Written by sue1pearson on 06 Oct 2005 about a trip in Mar 2005.
| We stayed at the Port Aventura/Universal theme park for a long weekend at easter and were impressed.
It is only 15 minutes taxi ride from the airport (ryanair do cheap flights there) but not in the town of Salou. it is also not too far from Barcelona (less than 1 hour on a train- think Brighton to london).
The park was very quiet at that time of year, no queues except for the really scarey serious rides -but staying at the hotel gets you 'front of the queue' passes anyway. The hotel was attractivly laid out, the most annoying bit was the rooms only have 2 double beds so kids have to share, but apart from that the children are well looked after with 'animations' in the evening, choices of family restaurants in the hotel and characters like Shrek and Woody woodpecker wandering around.
The park is well thought out and pretty, (mainly Spainiards but no problem with speaking English) with 'round the world' themes - as well as all the normal rides (we liked the log flume best but there are some amazingly scarey rollercoasters) there are also several shows - can-can in the wild west, pyrotechnics in peru, acrobatics in china hula girls in hawaii etc
This early in the season the water park is only partly opened indoors and the hotel pools are outdoors so aren't open at all but it is a good time of year to go with children as there are some very cheap deals and its not hot. It could also be a good base or stop off treat for travelling with a hire car if you want to combine grown-up culture with kiddies' fun and a beach holiday - although there isn't that much 'culture' in the immediate area. |
