My husband and I stayed in Samudra retreat (formerly Peninsula) hotel for 11 nights from 8th August to 19th August 07. We booked a villa with the shared pool but when we arrived at 9.30am they had upgraded us to a Lotus Pool Villa with a private pool and if booking again it is well worth the extra money for the privacy and luxury if you are travelling there.

The Villa is very large, with sitting room, bedroom, bathroom (indoor and outdoor) and small galley kitchen.

The pool area is quite large for 2 people with a nice decking area with 2 rocking chairs and a table and then a couple of steps down to the beds with umbrella where we spent most of our days. The pool is large enough and kept completely clean by the pool team who clean the pool every day (early morning before you have got up!) The gardners keep all the plants which mean the utmost in privacy trimmed and cut and you feel like you are in your own private oasis. We stayed in Villa 705 and it is not overlooked by any other villa or walkway. We even managed to skinny dip without feeling we were being bold!

The kitchen area you could forget about as it only has a large fridge, two hot plates and a sink.

Bathroom is very large with a shower that can fit at least 4 people. Only problem is that the wardrobes for the villa are situated in the bathroom, together with the safe which is a bit awkward. It is also not airconditioned and this would be a disadvantage after you get out of the shower and want to cool down. Leading out from the bathroom is a glass door to the outdoor hot tub and another large shower area and this is lovely when the evening has cooled down.

The bedroom only has a large king bed and a plasma tv in the room, very minimal but it has almost 360 degree windows of the pool and garden and is well set out. Double doors in the bedroom lead to the decking area overlooking the pool so you could easily climb out of bed and go straight into the pool!.

There is a slight hill alright up to the villa and it is alright when you are going down but coming back up is a bit of a strain so the golf carts are a great addition.
The restaurant is good, we had 2 meals there, very reasonable for a hotel but obviously much dearer than local restaurants.

Breakfast was very good with your eggs cooked to order and all you could possibly want. Staff were very friendly and helpful but sometimes were a little slow in clearing tables for new guests to sit for breakfast. It has no airconditioning as there are no walls so it can get a bit hot.

We did not sit by the communal pool at all during our stay but had cocktails there one evening, 2 for the price of 1.

Hotel spa is very good, we had manicures and pedicures and massages and all were done by experts and very reasonably priced. Obviously it was dearer than the massage shops all over the beach areas but the air conditioning and service were top notch and you knew you were in safe hands.

We took the shuttle service into Chaweng Beach a couple of evenings but found it to be very busy and just loads of shops. We preferrred to go to the Fishermans village in Bo Phut which was very quaint and eat in a couple of restaurants there (The Shack is excellent with great steaks for reasonable prices).

We booked our hotel transfers through Travel East and they were brilliant, would recommend them and would definitely use them again (we used them in Bangkok also).

All in all this is a hotel I would recommend to anyone who is looking to unwind and relax for a time. It is not for those who want noise, loud music and organised events. You could have your breakfast at 9.30am and come back to your cleaned villa at 10.30am and put your do not disturb on the door and not see anyone for the whole day. Pure Pleasure.

Hope you have a great holiday.
