San Fermin: Disappointing break at the San Fermin by R&I Hunter |
| Posted 27 March 2006 about a visit in October 2004 | Overall rating: 6.1 |
Booked a late break to the Sirocco Hotel in Benalmadina which was changaed at the last minute to the San Fermin Hotel. Our room was adequate but quite small but the worst thing about it was the balcony looked over the front of the hotel straight onto a large concrete area which was used as a car park by locals from early morning. The room though was clean and the staff friendly and helpful.
The hotel seemed to cater for lots of French and Spanish bus parties, who would stay for one or two nights and then move on. Consequently, doors would be banging and people shouting at all times of the day and night as the various buses arrived and left. The hotel put on nightly entertainment which usually meant lots of audience participation, ie. dancing, quizes and people generally making a fool of themselves. (Full marks to the guy who hosted the show the night we were there as he had to explain what was happening in at least four different languages.)
We went half board and the food was disapointing. Not much choice and the more popular things were soon taken and often as not, were not replaced. We later found out that the hotel was closing down for the season the following week, which I don't think is much of an excuse but probably explains a lot.
The pool area was ok (a plain rectangular pool which wasn't much used while we were there) but had a large grassy area surrounding it for any sun worshipers and the poolside bar was reasonably priced for snacks and drinks.
Although on an incline the hotel was well situated for most amenities with bars and restaurants within walking distance. The Marina is close at hand and well worth a visit or two. There are also cheap local bus and train services nearby to take you further afield. (ie. Malaga, Marbella, Mijas, Torremolinos etc.)
Overall we were disappointed in our stay at the San Fermin but would return to Benalmadina as we were very impressed with the area.
