San Marcial: Smashing apartments, in quiet resort. by Andrew Wilkinson |

San Marcial from the top end |
Just a short walk to the beach |
| These apartments are just minutes from the runway at Lanzarote, but don't be put off there are no night flights, limited noise, but great views of planes landing. You can actually walk under the flight path and marvel as the planes fly just a couple of hundred feet over head. Take some binoculas and see all the pilots give a wave as they prepare to take off, quite amazing.
There are not many apartments in the San Marcial and all are close to the pool, supermarket and bar. Whilst some may have a small advantage in terms of view or proximity to the pool there's not much in it.
Dip your toe in the water before diving head first into the pool, to say it's cold is an understatement. For some reason this does not fase the kids, but when they turn too blue probably best to try and prise them out of the water.
The on site bar is good, and the food is excellent. Miquel and Sissy are very good hosts and will see to it that you have a good time.
I did find that the reception was abit hit or miss, both in opening times and level of service, but it's not going to spoil the holiday unless you want it to.
There is limited evening entertainment in Matagorda, with probably just 7 - 8 bars to choose from in and around the 'Commercial Centre' and about the same in terms of restaurants. If you are a real party animal then a 5 minute taxi ride to Puerto Del Carmen is all that it takes. All the bars will have evening entertainment starting at around 9:30 ish, and stay open until you are finished drinking. Try the little sports bar to the left as you enter the centre from the path from San Marcial, you will get a good welcome and friendly conversation. Don't pay for your drinks until the end of the evening because they don't all get counted, and believe me there will be plenty of top ups.
If you like a stroll then the promenade runs from PDC to Playa Honda and beyond probably about 8-10 miles in total. Beaches in the immediate vacinity aren't that great, but 10-15 minutes towards PDC will soon sort that out.
You will see some naturists on the beach that runs along the other side of the Airport so be warned.
Overall I thought both the apartments and quiet location were ideal for my needs, and even though it was January the temperature was about 20 degrees celcius, so spot on for a bit of winter sun.
