Santa Croce, Dorsoduro Review: Very good Venice accommodation.

Written by R Phillips on 30 Jul 2005 about a trip in May 2005.

We stayed at Pensione La Calcina for three nights in June 2005. We paid 141euros per night per room.
Arrived Friday lunchtime. Depart Monday lunchtime.
The weather was very hot during this time. All day sunshine. Afternoon temperatures well past 30celcius.
The staff were very welcoming, and most spoke good english (hooray).
Our room was on the first floor (american second floor!).
The view was of the wall of the next-door hotel, some ten feet away. Not the best, although not every body can have a room with a view.
The room was furnished adequately with a reasonably firm bed, and clean linen (unlike some other places i've seen).
The room was as clean as you would want, as was the bathroom.
A plug-in mosquito deterrent was provided, although we didn't actually see (or hear) any of the little beasts.
The rail in the wardrobe was a bit fragile, and had to be guided into place,
although it threatened to do something unpredictable at any moment.
The detachable-type clothes hangers in the wardrobe didnt work, in that as soon as you put any weight on them (ie clothes) they fell apart and dropped your clothes on the floor of the wardrobe.
So some conventional hangers (assorted shapes and colours) were in the wardrobe, and it was these we used, along with the drawers provided.
The hot-water supply to the shower appeared to have mind of its own. All was fine if one person used the shower. However, a person following into the shower would have to run the hot tap for over five minutes before more hot-water appeared. Took a while to figure this out!
The towels supplied were very thin, tea towel type, cloth towels, rather than the fluffy ones most people would expect. We were prepared for this, having read about it on the internet, and had taken our own bath towels, and would suggest you do the same, if you stay here.
If you were anywhere other than Venice, the very poor TV provision would have been an important issue. As it was, the ten fuzzy channels weren't called upon to provide any entertainment - just as well.
The air-conditioning unit worked very hard whilst we were there, and was as effective as it could be in the circumstances.
Breakfast was taken on the jetty on the edge of the Canale della Giudecca, and was the usual fare with a most unusual and memorable setting.
We didn't take any evening meals at the hotel's restaurant, so cannot comment on their quality.
We did find several decent, reasonably priced, places to eat within ten minutes walk of the hotel. There is also a supermarket nearby.
Overall, we had no concerns of substance about Pensione la Calcina, and would not bother looking for somewhere different were we to return to Venice.
