We have just returned from a fantastic 11 day holiday in the Shandrani Hotel which was one of the best we have experienced.
Rooms: Standard could be improved and I believe they are redoing them all for this season but all usual amenities were to hand. Pet hate is a shower curtain which we had in our room so upgrade to a superior room which have doors!!

Food/Drink: Excellent, best I have received in an all inclusive hotel. Almost all cocktails were included and lots of nice wines on the wine list, food was beautifully presented and just all round perfect. You could effectively eat all day round by visiting the different restaurants!! We stopped having breakfast after 4 days due to the lunches being even more enticing!!

Facilties: Gym was very well set out and lots of equipment, used it every day to get over all the food we were eating. No use of the spa which was under a reconstruction exercise which was a pity as we normally use these facilities, (travel agent did not mention it before travelling). Beaches were amazing with such a contrast between them, some of the smaller ones had only us on them some days. Entertainment was ok in the evenings, nothing spectacular but we are not into the staged events that a lot of hotels seem to think they have to provide. Pools were very clean and tidy and always got a bed to sit on if we wanted one. Not too much aircraft noise as promised, only a few flights a day.

Staff: Second to none, so friendly and helpful. Had great chats with them as as they are all keen to talk to you if you invite a conversation. Head of Food and Beverage was Vicky who was a thorough gentleman and always looked after us. Lots of the waiters are formal initially but when you start up a conversation with them they always smile and start to chat. We tipped very good service as we went along as we felt if they made an effort with us we should thank them in the only way we knew. Hotel recomments a general tip at the end of your holiday in a box provided but not keen on that idea.

Sightseeing/shopping: We are not great at heading out on the organised excursions on any of our travels but we hired a taxi for the day with a driver provided and went with another couple to visit a few places of interest, it was a very cheap day as it only cost us €60 for all of us for the trip. He took us to some very good designer shops with great prices, bought 4 pairs of shoes ladies if you like shoes it is paradise, remember to bargain as all the shops are willing to move on price, most of them I paid between €20-€25 for them. The volcano is very dormant so not worth the trip but Port Louis is a nice town.

Travel: Went with Air France who were very unfriendly all the way, tried to get window and middle seats and ended up in the middle!! On the way back they put us upstairs and it took away some of my negative feelings towards them. The food was ok but not having the individual tv screens on the flight out was a pain as it is 11.5 hours from Paris to amuse yourself andif you can't sleep then not a lot to do!!! Would prefer to fly Air Mauritius as it seems to have offered a better service to others we met.

Golf: Husband played 3 times, twice in competitions where there is no charge for the club hire, remember to bring your own balls with you as they are expensive (same for tennis). He said the course is more a pitch and putt style one and not for the "real golfers".....

Weather - rained at some time every day we were there, usually at night or early morning, one or two days at lunch time. Very windy most of the time and will need a jacket at night (pashmina ladies) as the restaurants are all open with no walls. It is not supposed to rain in September at all so the locals were as surprised as us, some brides very disappointed as they were getting married in the rain.

In total we had a great time and would love to go back, the serenity package (all inclusive) is well worth the cost and our bill on check out was only €10 (hiring clubs one day). So please go and visit this hotel as the trip is well worth it.

Our first visit to Mauritius and probably the last. Not because we did not like Mauritius or the Hotel or the people. It is just that in my opinion the only reason people would come to Mauritius as opposed to other Tropical resorts is the snob factor. It costs more, there are no charter flights therefore it becomes a little more exclusive.

Don't get me wrong The Shandrani is a lovely hotel with very helpful, polite and friendly staff. The facilities are first class and it is a wonderful place for a holiday. The only drawback for us was that it is self contained resort and there was no where within walking distance to wander to even if you felt inclined to do so.

The Shandrani is part of the Beachcomber Group who own 12 hotels on Mauritius and as a guest at one hotel you can spend some time at another of their hotels (subject to a supplement where applicable). We chose to stay at the Mauricia at Grand Baie and were glad that we did not stay at that Hotel or that resort for the full holiday or we would have been dissapointed!

The lesson I have learnt is that Mauritius has some of the best resort hotels in the world and these will obviously cost more than your average holiday maker could possibly afford. Therefore if you are on a budget you can obtain much better value at some of the Maldive resorts or other closer destinations.

My final conclusion is also a negative in that Mauritius is not the exotic paradise I had imagined. True, it has some wonderful beaches, some of the best golf in the world (so I am informed) but overall the Island lacks character has an un- inspiring landscape and very little charm.
