Side Review: Side - Top Spot

Written by Alison Edwards on 05 Sep 2005 about a trip in Apr 2005.

A must do!

A night at the Ballet, Side Ampitheatre

I've now visited Side 3 times and still think it's my favourite part of Turkey. Ok so there used to be loads of Germans there but not anymore. Lots of Russian's and Scandanavian's but they are ok folk.

Side continues to change with each visit as more and more restoration is done in the winter. It has given me opportunities to do and see things that aren't possible in the Uk, for instance I went to see the Ankara State Ballet at the Ampitheatre, a classical concert at Aspendos, things I wouldn't dream of doing at home.

One of the previous writers is quite correct, some of the hotels you do have to walk passed the local tip (see my review of the Park Side), and some hotels are a fair old stroll away from Side town. If you pick your hotel carefully you will have a fantastic, educational but relaxing holiday.

The shops have had to change in line with government rules. They are no longer 'open' market stall type shops, they have all had to be covered in so are now proper shops with less hassle.

Turkish people remain the friendliest in the world, we were greeted with hugs and kisses by one shop we had frequented on our previous holidays, also received a warm reception in a restaurant (Trios) we had been to (also gave us the ballet tickets on our previous trip) on our visits before. When we were there in May this year we took a taxi and the taxi driver said 'you been in my taxi before', Park Side!'). Wouldn't happen in the UK.

Enjoy Side, take in the culture, the people, the scenery and you will have a holiday to remember.

ps - If you wear glasses they are great value for money in Turkey (especially Side), get your eyes tested before you go and take your prescription with you. My mum has had glasses from Anatolia Opticians (along the main drag on the left) the last twice we've been to Side, half the price and excellent service.
