I have stayed at the Sofitel St James on several occassions, both for business and pleasure.
The location of the hotel is fabulous on the corner of Pall Mall and St James Place which runs paralel to the Haymarket. For sightseeing around the capital it is perfectly placed. The rooms are absolutely superb and the beds amazing - I challenge anyone to say they have slept in a more comfortable hotel bed. I have been upgraded on two occassions to suites or junior suites but all the rooms are very comfortable, decorated in a contempory style and very well equipped.
The bathrooms are big and plush with lovely toiletries and a big walk in shower with two showers, one overhead and one hand shower. Turndown service and fresh towels at night. Breakfast is good but expensive unless you can get a special package.
The staff are so unlike London hotels, very friendly and helpful. I took my daughter for a weekend in London to celebrate her GCSE results and mentioned this to Sally-Ann, the guest relations manager, when I booked. The hotel left a beautiful scented candle for my daughter in the room with a congratulations card and then delivered up a delicious chocolate cake in the shape of a star.
If you are looking for luxury in London, and don't want to pay Ritz type rates (stayed there too, very overrated and expensive) go to the Sofitel. You wont be disappointed.
