Sol Balmoral: An average 3* hotel saved by the dining by Sian Ponting |
| Posted 29 July 2009 about a visit in July 2009 | Overall rating: 6.4 |
Overall the holiday was average but our party along with several others have all had the same gripes.
The hotel is old and tired and in need of a lift into the millenium, it is a very old 3* and in need of modernisation in most areas. Rooms were basic but clean and well maintained with cleaners visiting every day. With no air conditioning, the room fans weren't sufficiant but through the night made the temperature bearable.
The pools were busy but again clean and well maintianed. If you don't get to the pool side for 8 o'clock when the chairs are unlocked then you will not have anything to sit on.
The dining was the saving grace to our family as the food was varied, fresh and overall very enjoyable. The dining room in the Balmoral was very canteen like but over in the Chihuawa was a lot more restaurant feel. The showcase cooking was always good along with the fresh bread which was baked at the hotel and replenished constantly.
Location was suitable if you have young children who want to make the most of the all inclusive package and the pools but very limiting for evening walks etc. There was a shopping area with go carts and childrens rides within 10-15 minutes walk which hosted bars but a definate getaway location. On a plus point we only spent a minimal amount of money all week. Communication was non existant and directions around the complex along with the lack of understanding with reception made the first two days quite difficult (especially as there is no rep). On arrival our rooms (along with several others) were not ready and were made to wait several hours. If you are aware of this in advance then it takes away any stress as one hour turned to two, three and four.
The best advice I can give before choosing this hotel is, accept it is going to be a hotel based holiday, be up early to get a sun lounger and don't have high expectations of the evening entertainment. If you are a family, the children's clubs run twice a day and are run by excellent childrens reps. Wouldn't visit again through choice but if it was a holiday where you were allocated on arrival I could cope.

Sol Balmoral: not to bad by Isobel Bow |
| Posted 04 October 2008 about a visit in September 2008 | Overall rating: 6.9 |
The rooms were fine, the service was excellent except at the bar where there was always a long wait to get a drink, and a few of the bar staff were unhelpful to say the least,if not just downright rude. The entertainment unfortunatley was the worst we have ever seen in spain as the shows were childrens entertainment not adults. The reps show was probably the best we saw while we were there.
I think the dining room was excellent and the choices were very good , the food was always pipping hot and most things were made for you while you waited so you were not getting food that had lay on the trays for ages , fresh hot loaves out the oven every 10/15minuites made meal times a pleasure and 2 cooks at every meal making the food in front of you, so it is one of the best all inc dining rooms we have been in and we never once seen a single fly in the dining room. The rooms were cleaned every day with fresh towels layed out . the facilites at the hotel were ok but we only used the pool. We also went out after dinner most nights to the bars in the local town rather than que up for ages for a drink but that was our choice.
We were their for 2 weeks but we felt that 1 week was plenty in such a small town. We think that value wise it was about right, but only because it had such a excellent dining room .

Sol Balmoral: "Dad....can we come again" (say's it all doesn't it!!) by Tony Lound |
| Posted 28 August 2004 about a visit in July 2003 | Overall rating: 10.0 |
Went as a family of 4 with 2 teens via Travelcity, on an "All inclusive" basis.
This Hotel has the lot, it is probably one (if not) the best hotels I have visited on Majorca.
Run by the hotel group SOL MELIA, which in my opinion guarantees a good holiday from the off! this place boasts accomodation levels well in excess of its 3+star rating.
Where can I begin...Two pools, one loud & busy near the bar area, where all the usual games are held for both kids & adults & then there is the quiet pool, (its like being on a differant planet) where you can relax in relative peace + the gardens that also have sun loungers where you can find shade.
The entertainment is simply fantastic, anyone with kids cannot go wrong, they have all the usual clubs from Baby up to the Teens, with activities for them throughout the day and early evening.
At night, the Show is held on the outside terrace, with games to start then the entertainments team, followed by a guest act and we didn't see a bad one the 7 nights we were there.
The Restaurant and snack bar are excellent, with a wide variety of food, ranging from Spanish, English & other favorites like Indian etc. Never had to queue, although some people did, not realising they have two full ranges offering the same food at both ends of the restaurant & would all follow each other like lemmings to the one nearest the entrance!!
I do have a gripe (well you have to, dont you!)...The check in on arrivel was a right pain, 2 coaches rolled in together & with only 2 staff on the desk (both dealing with the same customer!) it took us 40 MINUTES to get a room, well its not as if they didn't know we were coming? & the town is too far away to use a taxi and beat the rush.
Next door is the sister Hotel The CHIWAUHAS (or something). You can use all the amenities here also but you pay for the drinks, so we never visited!
All in all this hotel is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me & my family & we are returning again for a week next year without fail.

all inclusive are drinks in plastic cups? >> Answer this question | | | | >> | Answer 1 by S Smith (07 Oct)
In pool areas or outside they usually are. Little feet do not like smashed glasses.
